Pets get rabies shots
Attendance was far lower
than expected at a rabies
clinic held at the Seaforth
Arena on Wednesday, Dec.
10. Dr. Bruce Raithby, of the
Health of Animals office in
Seaforth, said he expected
between 400 to 500 animals
at the daylong clinic.
However. only 205 dogs and
152 cats were brought in for.
their annual shots.
Dr. Raithby said the local
clinic wasn't as busy as
clinics had been in other
centres around the county,
perhaps due to the day's
unsettled weather.
Both Dr. Raithby and Dr.
Brian Nuhn of the Seaforth
Vet Clinic agreed there has
been an increase in the
reported cases of rabies this
.year: The vets said they had
seen an increase in the
Seaforth area, mainly in wild
animals like foxes and
skunks.
Dr. Raithby added there'd
also been an increase in the
incidence of the disease in
cattle in the county. The
provincial government pays a
subsidy of up to 5500 per
cattlebcast for cattle who die
with rabies. Ontario is the
only province which has this
subsidy, according to Dr.
Raithby. •
The vet said there was also
a case of rabies in a domestic
pet- a cat - in Wingham a few
weeks ago. He said most pet
owners, however. are- con-
scientious about keeping
dogs and cats vaccinated.
