When Bill Campbell, a long time race horses.
resident of James Street, retired as Roads A -few yearsago, Bill bought Allissa Haw
Superintendant for McKillop Township, Lea, one of the -two horses he now owns.

-around"' for farming purposes, explains In May 1979, Allissa Haw Lea gave birth
Bill. NO he owns two horses, the latest in to a colt sire by Camper, from Aylmer. The
a string that has covered just about every colt was a male, so the obvious nathe for
type of the animal, from big draft horses to him was Allissa's Lad.
it is Aiiisstes Lad tha now cornrnands
much of gill's attention. Starting the
first of November, as soon as he had
retired, Bill began taking Lad out for an
exercise run every morning. Bill goes
over to the barn on Goderigh Street West"
right beside the Preeze King, where his
horses, reside, "every morning except
Sunday" to exercise tad. The horse iS
• harnessed to his jogging cart after being
fed at about 8 a.m., and with Bill at the
reigns, is jogged over to the race track at
the fair. grounds behind the arena. On a
good day when the track is dry and
fairly firm, the exercise usually includes
about five miles, But, as was the case
Tuesday morning, if the track is wet and "
soft, or the weather is poor, that five miles
is..guickly_reducecito threq.
"Fives miles on a dry track," says Bill,
"is a lot easier than three miles when it's
muddy."
Bill concedes that he isn't a trainer
himself, and says that, "I'm doing it
(jogging.Lad) because I enjoy it." But this
doesiet mean that Allissa's Lad isn't
destined for the track.
"It's too early to know, yet whether this
,,.. horse will go. to the (race) track or ,not,"
answers Bill'. But he hopes 'Lad will if
given the proper training. "If not this one,
the!), perhaps the next," says Bill,
indicating that Allissa Haw Lea is in foal
again, with the colt due early in February.'
, The last time that Bill owned a race
base that went to the traek. and 'did any
winning was back in the 1950's. But at
that time, he was only going for "hundred ,
dollar purses" which don't even cover the
cost of owning a racer. On the other hand if
Bill were in it just for the money, he
• probably would have given up long ago. "I
• enjoy it," he says, "and that's enough for
me."
Of course, having a winning animnal
would he nice. Bill points out that one
famous winner,INliatross, sold:TOT; $100,000
for only half its interest. "You'd only need
one like that," jokes Bills.
As for Allissa's Lad andfuture stable ,
mates, Bill says lightly, if they go fast
enough,. they'll make money, and if they
don't go' fast enoqgh, tali that's
another question."
