,THEIR mon ING.',140aThe rain and the cold Tuesday stop Bill
oarnpbell.frorn taking NS standardbred Allissa's Lad, for their morning
jog.across toWit and around the race track. Bill, who has been around
.hOrses all 'his life, hopes to have this one year old trained to race.
' When Bill Campbell, a long time
resident of James Street, retired as •Roads
Superintendent for McKillop Township,
--October-31, —he—knew—exactly what- he --
wanted to do. He wanted to spend more .
time with his premier hobby . . . horses.
Bill was born and raised on a Win, so he
has been' around horses most of his life.
"My father would have up to 20 hOrses
around" for farming purposes, explains
Bill. Now he owns two horses, the latest in
a string that has covered just about every
type of the animal, from big draft horses to
race horses.
A few years ago, Bill bought Allissa Haw
Lea, one of the two horses he now owns.
Allis sar standardbredrwasAobe raced, -But..
something happened while the animal was
away being trained. She broke her right
sesmoid, a bone in her right rear leg.
A11issa4s racing days were over, before she
ever got to the track.
In May 1979, Allissa Haw Lea gave birth
to a colt sire by Camper, from Aylmer. The
colt was a male, so the obvious name for
him was Allissa's Lad.

It is Allisse's Lad thdt nowcommands
much of Bill's attentiuo, Starting the
first of November, as s6ou as he had
retired, Bill began taking Lad out for an
exercise run every morning. Bill goes
over to the barn on Goderich Street West,
right beside the Freeze King, where his
horses reside, "every morning except
Sunday" to exercise Lad. The horse is
harnessed to his jogging cart after being
fed at about 8 a.m., and with Bill at the
reigns, is jogged over to the racetrack at
the fair grounds behind the arena. On a
good day when the track is dry and
fairly firm, the exercise usually includes
about five miles. But, as was the case
Tuesday morning, if the track is wet and
soft„ orilLe weather is_poor, that five_miles
is quickly reduced to three.
"Fives miles on a dry track," says Bill,
"is a lot easier than three miles when it's
muddy."
Bill concedes that he isn't a trainer
himself, and says that, "I'm doing it
(jogging Lad) because I enjoy it." But this
doesn't mean that Allissa's Lad isn't
destined for the track.
tOtiroirnent
"It's too early to know yet whether this
horse will go to the (race) track or not,
answers Bill. But he hopes Lad will, if
given the proper training. "If not this one,
then perhaps the next," says Bill,
indicating that Allissa Haw Lea is in foal
again, with the colt due early in February.
The last time that Bill owned a race
horse that went to the track and did any
winning was back in the 1950's. But at
that time, he was only going for "hundred
dollar purses" which don't even cover the
cost of owning a racer. On the other hand if
Bill were in it just for the money, he
probably would have given up long ago. "I
enjoy it," he says, "and that's enough for

famous winner, Niatross, sold for $200,000
for only half its interest. "You'd only need
one like that," jokes Bills.,
As for Allissa's Lad and future stable .
mates, Bill says lightly, ' if they go fast
enough, they'll make money, and if they
don't go fast enough, well, then that's
another question."
