Last weekend, I was defeated by two
cream puffs. Perhaps defeated is not the
most accurate term, as I certainly
demolished them in short order, but at the
final analysis, when I stepped on the
bathroom scales, it was apparent that they .
had won out in the end.
I love to eat, but a fundamental law of
nature states that whatever goes into the
mouth, either must be worn off by.
exercise, or it settles more or less
perma, nently. If only I could get interested
in exercising -the type of muscle toning and
body shaping that pares off inches; but I
doti't like it, and when I force myself, an
audience always -seems to gather to say
"Whatcha- doing on the floor?" or more
often, jump on me and lick my face.
Jogging is fine for others, but for me -it's
too cold, I -haven't time, 1d feet
conspicious...All excuses, meaning really
that I don't want all the neighbours to peek
outtheirearly morning windows, and say,
"There goes ole' Chubby again, trying to
wear off those two creampuffs". (I'm sure
they show from fifty feet.)
I made such a resolute beginning last
week, one boiled egg on dry toast, only
apples for snacks, small servings without
dessert for supper. And then I went into
that store, and those creaMpuffs just
looked hodiemade, like the ones -we used to
spurge on, back when more cream was
used in home baking. So, I bought four,
and even sent.tny son back for two more, so
we wouldn't argue over the extra one.
What gluttony I
TIPS OF OUR NOSES
Oh, it was lovely when we got home
for lunch. licking the cream off our fingers
and the tips Of our hoses after it squirted
out the sides when you took that first bite.
And there were still three left for supper.
What an inspifationl Rising to the
occasion. 1 prepared pork chops parmesan.
brussels sprouts au gratin. and smashed
potatoes. With the second cream puff for
dessert. it should have been bread and
water. -
Then. the moment of truth. Dressing to
.go out for thc evening. I found that my new
grey slacks just wouldn't fit anymore- Run
'to check the scales-wowl - this is the time
for drastic action. Nothing by mouth, until
further notice.
How 's this for a start? Up bright and
early the next morning. for dry toast (100%

house, and to the woodpile from then tiu ,

.(My husband says more like 2 or 3, but
don't you believe him). Short break here
for lunch -hamburg and black coffee,- then
back .to the wobdpile, muscles creaking,
fingers bleeding,. to finish the job and
sweep up the floor. A simple supper of
bacon and eggs at 7:00', follavd by a hot
hath, was the last activity betbre collapse
in the favourite chair. That. was yesterday. ,
Today, I've had cups of black coffee and
clear tea, To supplement- the dry toast -
routine. There's a box of candy shrift on
the china cabinet, a leftover birthday gift
from a.friend (some friend). I will got touch
it. I will not even think about it. I'm so sick
of nibbling on apples.
, This is a funny world that we live in. No
matter where ypu look, you are surrounded
• by so many luscious things to eat. Pizza,
steak and gravy, cooking shows on T.V. I
gained 5 lbs. jest reading Edna
Staebler'S Mennonite cookbook, "Food
that Really Smecks". Yet on the other
hand, we are supposed to be slim graceful
size 5 or 7 gazelles. with cheekbones like
Nancy -.Reagan. The two ideals are jtist not
compatible. Do we eat heartily, and show
it -or be picky and skimpy. to present a
beautiful slender silhouette, sometimes too
• weak from hunger' to stand without
propping?
ONLY NUTRMONAL STUFF
rm going to lick this thing, and wear
those slacks again. For the next few weeks,
eat only small -quantities of nutritional
stuff (see Canada's food rttles), weigh
myself eyed morning before breakfast and
even get my weight below normal by a
icomtortable margin. When 1j reach that
point, watch out! We'll he spaghetti
with homemade sauce for supper. and 111
totally pig out, but hopefully still be able to
look myself in the eft after weighing in
again. They say that you have to totally
change your eating habits when you lose
weight. but how can you turn Off a love of
spaghetti?perhaps. by the time Christmas
is over. I'll be in trouble again. •
Dui in the meantime. I will not touch that
candy' .
