Many parents '0110; teach-
ers are eohcerned that kids
today ..watch 'too Mich
some cases this is
true, but not necessarily for
every. child. Last week I
lookedr:throngh ; the T.V.
Times: in, the London Free
Press : ttpd picked out some
programs both good and bad
for fandly viewing.
Most kids like shows with
comedy ,or a family story.
Programs such as Happy •
Days, Eight is ,Enough,
Three's Company and La-
verne and Shirley are the
best, examPfes Of a little bit of
bofh. Kids in grades six and
up usually prefer shows like
W.K.R,P. in Cincinatti .or_Lis_tening_to_a_puppet_seem& eART0 ONS?-
Three's Company. These
shows have humour that is a
relief to teenagers. Sure,
they take Pp an hour or tic)
of study time on a school
night, but sometimes it's
really worth it, It gives you
little break from your home,
work,or a long column. •
For pre-schoolers, ' T.V.
can be More educational and.
worthwhile than parents
make it out to be. Shows such
as Mr. Dressup, Romper
Room, the Muppets and
Sesame Street teach kids a
lot. For example, I doubt
very many• parents will deny
the fact that Big Bird can get
through to their child as well
as a nursery school teacher
much more interesting, mostly because they speak to
kids in a language they
understand. Sesaint- -Street

° Sesame Street teaches
children how to count
through methods that child-
ren love. Mr. Dressup also
uses puppets to teach, but
not as much. Of course, the
Muppets, created by Jinn
Henson, deal with puppeti,
but not so much for educa-
tion as for entertainment. All
of these shows are great for
pre-schoolerS.

Children love to watch
cartoons as well. Lots of kids
would love to spend a Satur-
day morning watching
"Fangface" trap down a
cook and Barbapapa turfilato
a million characters. TYR to
me, is a waste of Saturday
morning or in short, three or
our-frours-.--There is really -
nothing educational about
cartoons, but they sure are
entertaining. Cartoons pro-

Walt Disney World is an
entertaining, educational
program for the whole family
Many shows are really
good while others aren't so
good. Kids can .learn a lot
from television. In fact, tele-
vision is becoming a major
educational device. Howie
Meeker has advertised a new
system that teaches students
'about different' careers • by
TX, or video -type, Another
device is called "Intellivi-
sion" by Mattel!. '
So, even though T.V.
wasn't around when our

does teach kids a lot.
