And helps one to forget,
But time so far has only

How much we miss you yet.

• PHOTOSTORY BY ALICE GRID
-Riding to the hounds you say? In the
Staffa area? Why that's topping, old sport.
• Last Thursday morning, the baying of
• hounds and sound of the bugle rang out
over farms in the Staffa area as members of
the Trollope Hunt -Club from Hyde ,Park
rode to the hounds. A dozen riders, many
dressed in the distinctive hunt uniform,
started from ..Jack Kinsman's farm and
followed their, hounds through fields and
woodlots in the area.
Although the "live" hunt didn't turn up
ae fox, Robert Trollope, one of the
huntsmewe_ said the foxhounds did follow
one line of scent. Farmers in the area have
reported seeing a number of foxes recently.
The riders, including Bevan and Dave
Kinsman, were led by Major Peter
Wainwright of England, master of the
hunt. • The scarlet -coated Major Wain-
wright is a former officer with the Royal
Welsh Fusiliers and now lives in Taunton -
in -Somerset, England. 1--le's the formEr
master of the New Forest Hunt in Britain
and comes to Canada annually to ride to
the hounds with the TrolloPe Hunt Club.
On Thursday's hunt, 171/2 couples or 35
foxhounds went on the "live" hunt, which
means hounds follow the scent of whatever
wild animals are in the area. Other clubs,
like the London Hunt and Country Club,
often hunt "drag" hunts, which means the
hounds follow a scent which has been, laid
prior to the hunt.
Many of the Trollope ,Hunt Club's
hounds were imported from England. The
club owns 301/2 couples in total, which are
kept at kennels in Thorndale, Tony
"Seotty" MacDonald, who keeps an eye on
hounds during the hunt, is kennel master.
When the kennel master was asked by
this reporter, witnessing her first hunt, if
foxes were ever released ahead of the
riders, he replied in rather shocked tones.
"of course not, it's not cricket." The
kennel 'man added foxhounds often come
on the scent of other wildlife, including
rabbits', coons and sometimes deer. Since
deer are a protected species, the foxhounds
have to be quickly taken off the scent of
deer. Mr MacDonald also brings a terrier
along with hirn to hunts, in the event the
hounds run into a burrowing animal.
While Thursday's morning hunt didn't
rim a :rex to ground, Mr. MacDonald
pointed out that really isn't the object of
the exercise - ave're out for the chase.
The Hunt Club contacted Jack Kinsman
earlier aids summer about starling a hunt
from his farm, .but waited until the bean
crop was off. so they didn't interfere with
the harvest. The club plans to return to the
area in November. Before the hunt, Major
Wainwright approached area farmers to
get a signed letter of clearance so riders
and hounds could cross their farms.
The riders in the hunt were an impres-
sive sight in their scarlet and black coats,
following the foxhounds across the fields.
The male riders are entitled to wear the
scarlet hunt colours lied coats) at the
discretion of the master of the boundt,
Many hunt clubs require members tO
complete a certain number of hunts before
presenting them with their colours.
The ladies ridino in the hunt, .and most
of the men, wore the traditional black
coats, sometimes with hunt buttons, alSri
presented at the discretion of the masters.
The da'rk 'coats, edged with blue, are the
colours ,of the Trollope•Htint club.
• In addition- to the Kinsmans who were
invited to ride with the hunt, three area
residents who belong to the Trollope Hunt
Club -and rodellniriday are Steve PneStat.
or of Exeter, Lynn Flowers of Clinton,: and
Donna-Wells-of-Luean. ....
The Trolicipelliint Club has also ridden
to the hounds in the Thamesford, Ingersoll,
Clandeboye and Sarnia area.
