mons people.
Prior to the discussion a
" film on triatiluana use by
children in the United States
under the age of 16 was
shown with Short saying the
film was realistic and many
of the children pictured re-
sembled sorne of the youths
which he had dealt with
locally,
Ellison anrEpp Iad simi-
lar feelings about,the film in
that it presented a realistic
picture.
In one of the recurring
themes of the eOning Glad -
ding ,said he believed some
parents wereveglecting their
duty when it came to the
supervision of the children
and that there was a real
problem in terms of a double
standard. "When you have a
double standard it makes it
difficult to deal with the
children o,n the matter."
McClure stated alcohol
was more popular among
students than marijuana and
that while the alcohol or drug
abuse problem mav begin at

the home the school does
have a responsibility.
"Hcify a day goes by
when 1 don't see a person
affected in some manner by
alcohol," Ecker stated and
added that as a parent, he
would be upset if he dis-
covered his children were
smoking marijuana, but that
he wouid be more upset if
they were using alcohol;\
In a question and(answer
session Short said the courts
were leveling heavier fines
against drug pushers and
that the penalties for drink-
ing and driving had been
stiffened. After his third
drinking and driving convie-
tion a_driver- could lose his
licence for three years.
SHAHS teacher Bruce
Perry put the blame for
alcohol and drug abuse on
the shoulders of the parents
and suggested that as a last
resort all laws be eliminated
and people be made respon-
sible for their own actions.

parents, we can't blame the

Crown Attorney Gary Hun-

Seaforth police officer and
one of the town's justices of
the peace may have chosen a
course of action which result-
ed in a Clinton man unneces-
sarily spending two days in
Stratford jail on impaired
driving charges.

years. You can't get rid of all
of them. To' control corn
borer you have to dheck for
damage in July. If you have a
certain percentage of plants
with eggs or early feeding
signs, you spray. This spray
will control a percentage of
the borers. It will kill the
borer that it comes in contact
with. However, this spray
only lasts tor a short time. It
Ivill not kill borer's that hatch
later in the ytar.
So you see the problem.
You can spray for corn borer
but unless this spray is timed
tight, it won't do any good.
It also is recommended to be
sprayed into the whorl of the
plant. Can yout, sprayer do
that? Another factor involves
the number of eggs laid in
relation to usual yield de-
pression.
CORN BORER NO WORSE
THIS YEAR
There was no significant
difference in the number of
adults laying eggs this year
as opposed to last year. We
obtained this information
from the people who monitor
corn borer every year. How-
ever, there may have been
greater survival of eggs laid.
Or the one that did hatch
may have done more damage
But. given average condi-
tions, the number of adults
around this year usually
would not make spraying
Pay.
A big difference seems to
be related to hybrid differ-
ences. This difference, I
interpret as stalk strength. I
have checked 3 of the area
corn trial demonstrations this
past week. There is a big
difference in standability.-
You may interpret this as
corn borer tolerance. I inter-
pret it as stalk strength.
WhPh I see a hybrid standing
like a fence and the hybrid
next to it hugging the
ground, to me that's a
difference in stalk strength. I
don't believe the farmer who
suggested that "the adults of
the corn borer check for corn
hybrid signs and then onty
eat certain hybrids".

alyzer test in Goderich, Mr.
Bezzo was -charged:- - • ---
Under normal circum-
stances, said the crown attor-
ney, the accu sed is released
after he signs an appearance
notice, an agreement to ap-
pear in ourt to answer the
charges.
"Bezzo said he would go to
jail before he woWd sign the
appearance notice," said
Seaforth pofice_Chief Jelin
Cairns. Seaforth justice Of
the peace, Robert Dinsmore,
signed the committment war-
rant which sent the accused
man• to Stratford. Chief
Cairns said Mr. Dinsmore
could have refused to sign.
Both Mr. Hunter and the
tion --police-chief believe the 'Shia;
could have been handled
differently. The crown attor-
ney said Mr. Bezzo could
have been handed a sum-
mons. Chief Cairns said un-
der similar circumstances the
accused is often Meld by
police until a relative comes
to get him. "I spoke to the
police chief and the officer
about it," said crown attor-
ney Hunter. "that's about all
I can do at this stage."
Mr. Bezzo appeared in
provincial court in Goderich
last Monday, and was re-
leased until he appears again
