democratic process.
The residents' grouprep-
resented by nada Kauf-
man of 4 Egan Cycle, had
asked the Perth County
Board of Education three
weeks ago to provide busing
for their elementary school -
aged children. The children
have to walk just over a mile
K o Hamlet School.
Last week, the board re-
jected by one vote a motion
to grant the request.
White the cosf of providing
the busing would have been
tninimal--there are already
buses running ht the vicinity -
some trustees felt it was
important to stick to board
policy and not set a prece-
dent that might encourage
ether parent groups to come
forward with requests for
busing.
The board did resolve, at
the suggestion of a superin-
* tendint of business Leigh
Anderson, to review its
whole policy on providing
transportation.
The present policy states
that if public transportation
is availabte within a half mile
of the child's residence, the
board will not provide busing
City buses do stop within a
half ntileof the Queensland
subdivision, Mr. Anderson
pointed 6"t according to Mr.
Anderson, the Education Act
does not say the board
must provide busing. It only
says parents are not obliged
to send their children to
school in the event basing is,
not provided.
PREMENT-SETIING
Trustee C.E. Dearing
warned the borid before the
vote wasjaken that to grant
the Queensland request
would be "a precedent set-,
tin move."
"This board will ire fa
with all sorts of ttqjEts

ation is not ImOssible for
these students. The city %is
there. I'm not saying that's
ideal, but it is there," he
said.
"I don't think," Mr.-De.ar-
ing added, "that 'WC should
deny them (the Queensland
children) the opportunity of
becoming the healthiest stip
dents in the board!"
