He claims to be a Toronto businessman, but is reluctant to discuss the exact nature of his businessaaLately, he, has been spending much of his time travelling through this part of South- western Ontario, talking on radio open line shows, and giving newspaper interv.iews to further the cause of his group in Canada. What is thik cause, and what group does he represent? Mr. MeWhirter is the Eastern Canada representative of the Canadian Knights of the Ku Klux Klan, and they hope to make Canada "lily-white 'racist nation" within 20 years. After a nationalreferendum has been organized to ihnif,,future immigration to white people only-, bon -white Canadians will the paid to leave this country. If this is impossible due to the length of time that they have been Canadians, he suggests that they be moved hito-griFetarafeas cghttratrrfre Vest -Me - will, go to the white Canadians, and. the non-white people must establish their own economy. separate and independent. It will work as apartheid does in South Africa. McWhirter is quoted in the London Free Press (Sept. 24, 1980), as saying JeWish and native people must choose nationalism before their religious or • cultural origins, or be guilty of treason to ' Canada. One hesitates to even respond, to such extreme beliefs, for fear of generating more, publicity for this orgaization: they seem to thrive on adverse reaction. But it is a somewhat threatening 'fact that McWhirter claims to have•established the Klan in Walkerton, Clifford and_Hanover. He opened an office in Toronto recently. and -proposes to do the same in Kitchener and London. STOP ITS GROWTH These plans may be difficult to carry through, if Kitchener 'mayor Morley Rosenberg, or London's Orlando Zamprogna have their way. They are trying to "stcip this organization's growth by the. enforcement of municipal laws and by public discussion. Amerie.gn president L.B i Johnson tried to do this n 1966. by asking the \congress to pass laws curbing the anti-government activities of the Klan. Obviously, these men believe the old saying that evil prevails when good men do nothing. Most of the KKK organizations existing , today would deny links with the historical Klan of the American South. White sheeted costumes. pointed hoods. scarlet crosses to denote Christianity (?) are out of fashion today, as is their Nazi- lite salute. But there are still similarities in their goals POt:POUrri • By Jeannelkirby and prejudices that extendf)Nay back. even to the:aftermath of the American CiviP War. Formed in Tennessee in 1865, the earlier organization used lynching. flogging and cross burning to terrorize white northerners who were moving into go_vern- ment positions in the war-torn South, and also to dissuade the black ex -slave from using his right to vote. When stability and order was restored in 1809, this group was disbanded. . In 191,5, the Klan reorganized in Atlanta. Georgia, direaing powerful Campaigns of hatred against the black people. Jews, Roman Catholics, radicals, and all for- eigners. With five million members, their political power reached an apex, before they lost support and dissolved the or a organization in 1944, owing the American federal govenrment over $500.000 in back taxes, During this period. flogging. lynching ' and cross burningwas used against those the Klan opposed, In 1949, when the world was settling down again after World Wet 11, repres= sentatives from six southern states met in Alabama ,to . form a new natienal or- ganization of the KKK. In 1952. 60 members in North Carolina were con- victed of assauftand conspiracy to kidnap, Cross barning and flogging increased after the American Supreme Court's decision to end sftregation in the public schools. Do .you remember the picture of the solitary. black child heading up the walk to the school, with armed troopers on all sides to hold back the °mob of jeering hating people? Or the three little girls burned to death in the basement ,Of a Birmingham -%—thirreli? Or Ine-three. mit righTS- w,orkeTc- who .disappeare.d forever in Mississippi during the 1960's? All these outbmits caused a congressional investieat ion , • white , folloWed by President Johnson's •re-.; commendation in ‘1966. It is very hard to understand tha:Klan's claim to be acting in the name ;A' 'God, preserving the white Christian society.' defending morality and family life, when they also claim that Adolf Hitler was misrepresented and misinterpreted. As for the extermination of six million Jews during, the holocaust, Krali" representative . in Ontario Doug O'Hare states -that it just didn't happen (London Free Press.• Sept. 20780). This young man also states that he will fight if provoked. heink a legally licensed hunter With a rifle. There are threatening implications here. • The World of Churches. responding to racism in the 1980'S, recdntly held a consultation attended by nearly,. 300 member churches from more than 100 , countries. On Saturday morning, residents 'of the south end of the street set up 14' booths offering everything from antique picture frames to crafts to garden produce for sale. Frank Phillips, who organized the com- munity sale, said not only was it successful from a selling point of view, but it was also "real fun." Buyers were lured into -the area by signs promising "arts - crafts - junkeroo." While the mothers were re -filling the coffeemaker, their children entertained themselves playing in one of Mr. Phillip's unique cars. • Mr. Philips said as the morning sale came to an end, people at the , different booths traded gods and the sale ended with an auction of anything still left on . tables. With the successful Chalk Street sale behind him. Frank Phillips suggests maybe the town could consider combininga garage sale' with the Farmer's Market. - next -time it's held in Victoria Park., The secret of the sale, according to its organizer - to bargain, totaggle, to forget about dollars and have ffan making a deal. THE CHALK STREET. MARKET The residents of the south end of Chalk Street turned their neighbourhood into a giant garage sale on Saturday morning.
