"NOW this mond little ball is the cat. Or,
can be called the IdtlY,"
"Great", I thought to myself as the
instructor held up a small hard white ball
"I Wonder what the difference is, But then
again, deIreally Care?"
• This Strange, set of circumstances
occurred Outing my first lessons at lawn
bowling, and at the time, my level of

I went to the free lessons as part of a

to grasp a reasonable Understanding of the
activity in lustily° hours, espeCially since I
was Walking into it cold turkey:. ,without
any previous kna7Iedge of the rules; the
methods of playing or even of the point of
the game. ^
Here's what I learned. First of all, lawn
bowling is performed on a rink of grass. I
forgetthe dimensions. But why is it called
a rink? I though a rink was an ice covered
surface used for playing hockey.

First the White targetball is referred to as a

You cau't cook with one. You 'out eat your
breakfast out Of it, 0 why call them
boWls? What is wrong with balls?
Anyway, I was told that the'object of the
game was to get one of, your bowls closest
to the feline,_ I mean the kitty, while
throwing the bowl from the opposite end Of
the rink. Sounded easy enough. :
I picked up one of the bowls that 1: had
been given. Right ---away 1 knew that
sornothinn-wasnIther. The bowl looked
funny. It didn't take long to find out exactly
what was wrong. I rolled the bowtdoivirtne
rink, and the stupid thing carved out of my
rink, across the next one and onto the one
betide it before going into the dtich.
Bewildered, I tried again. This time the
fool thing curved in the other direction, and
interupted another game. "What is going
on?" I asked myself. Then I asked the
instructer,

Be explained that the thing whicktnakes
