Years agone history can be fun
BY PATRICIA RIMMER
Several weeks ago,
someone - at the Expositor
office suggested to me that I
try writing another column
along with this one. This
sounded fine to me although
in the back of -my mind and
everyone else's mind too. I
thought that this would make
my life awfully busy and it is
but, this week for the first
time I'm trying to write
Years Agone. .
It is an old column that has
been written for years anc?
years. It reveals much of
Huron County's history and
most of Seaforth's past. The
column, has been written by
Pearl McFarlane for several
years and since she had to
give up the column because
of illness and then a move to
Huronview, a few of the
employees at the Expositor
have been taking turns writ-
ing the column each week.
During the search for a new
permanent author, someone
suggested me and I said I'd
like to give it a try.
t Actually, it's kind of fun to
do. There's a lot of research
behind it as you have to flip
through old newspapers
dated from a hundred years
ago and pick out interesting
subjects. At first 1 thought
that would be almost imposs-
ible, but actually once you
gtart looking over the differ-
ent newspapers, it becomes
quite interesting. I found
several of my friends'
mother's and father's names
in these old (and not very
old) newspapers and thought
of seeing these little boys
and girls when they were so
little. Then you could find
wedding pictures of these
people a few years later and
then finally your friend's
birth announcements. It
really does become interest-
ing. But, then again, that's
not what 1 write about when I
write In The Years Agone.
You're probably wonder-
ing how we could keep all of
these newspapers without
losing and ripping the major-
ity of them. Well, each week,
someone at the Expositqr,
even now, puts the weekly
newspaper into a neat book
with the rest of the news-
papers for that...year. Then
when Debember 30th rounds
the corner, they are' sent
away to be bound and then
put into a cupboard with the
numerous other books.

years, so I could find inform-
ation to write about in,The
Years Agone 100 years back,
75 years ago, 50 years ago
and 25 years ago. Each week
for many. years the writer of
the Years Agone has written
from dates in those years.
While reading some of the
old new,spapers I noticed a
lot of changes in Seaforth. I
read many articles about the
fall fair and the sort of
competition that they had
then. It was much the same,
yet the rides and midway was
much different.
There were dairy competi:
dons and you could enter
your prize petunias if you
wanted to but in the other
respects, it was different.
For one thing, they had Fall
Fair Queens, but it was a real
pageant. Now, the girls are
chosen as contestants per-
haps six months ahead but
they are not introduced as
being a contestant for
months.
In the books with all the
old newspapers, there is a
kit of history. Some good
news. Some bad news. Some
tif the good news were events
Ecuch as the opening of the
new arena. pool. high school,
public school.. .What? Well, 1
guess s that's good news, for
them at least. The bad news
included many car accidents.
the Stephen Trustoott case
and the 1877 Seaforth fire.
As you can see, In The
Years Agone, has got an
awful lot of history and
information behind it. Of
course, then again when you
think of it. today's news-
paper and events will likely
make the column 25 years
from now. Can 'you imagine
it. someday. we will be
history.
