Over .100. area residents
toured ;the addition to the.
Vanastra gee Centreen Fri-
day evening, after the Centre
S Officially opened.
The addition, which in-
cludes an exercise room,
Changing rooms and an acti-
vity centre, WAS the centre of
controversy when first pro-
posed in 1979. A group of
ratepayers, led by Lloyd
Eisler of Egmondville, pro-
tested construction of the
addition since they said it
didn't serve needs of resi-
dents in the south of the
township, and seemed an
unwisealnove when the cen-
tre was already operating at
a loss.
The .addition cost- 5227,480
but 87 per cent of this
expense was met by provin-
cial grants. A fundraising
committee, headed by Tuck-
ersmith council member
Robert Bell, has raised
538,000 to date in a public
subscription drive. Their
goal is to raise 550,000, and
the campaign will continue
this fall.
Jack Riddell, MPP Huron -
Middlesex, told those pre.
sent he, was ,pleased to see
"#nAtsonle Of the money the
government collects in taxes
is being spent in our small
coMmunities.", He Said he
felt the government grant
money had been used wisely,
since the addition Will be
meeting the special needs of
handicapped users.
The politician said he reali-
zes there were objections to
building the addition and
said he doesn't know of any
project that has had mote
news coverage.
He told the audience he
had met with sonte of the
people objecting to the addi-
tion's construction.
But the MP added he
thought the building would
be an asset to Huron County,
and said"I have to think it is
e worthwhile project."
Bill Morley, Huron County
warden, told the audience,
"We're certainly lucky in the
co...linty of Huron to have a
facility like this." He said the
Vanastra• conplex was geo-
graphically situated so it can
be used by residents across
the county.

M cOnsultant,
with the Londott Tegional
office .Of the Ministry , of
Cnitlarq and Recreation, said
he -believes Tiickersmith
Council showed "some great
foresight" in planning a
building like- the recreation
complex which opens up
opportunities for all the
township's residents.
He said building the addi-
tion took "a tot of courage"
in light of criticism, and is
particularly timely since 1981
will be named the year of the
Disabled.
Pat Watson of Brussels,
who represented the SpeCial
Needs Groups in the county,
thanked those who had made
the 'addition- possible, and.
said; "It's going to ,be great.
to have such wonderful facili-
ties here."
HISTORY
Before cutting the ribbon
to officially open the addi-
tion, Reeve Ervin Sillery of
Tuckersmith reviewed the
history of the recreation cen-
tre addition.
He said in 1978 three
people were hired under a
Canada Works grant to pro -
,vide acquatic and fitness
programs for the disabled in
the area. He said when it was
decided to renovate the cen-
tre,. to make it mere acces-
sible to the handicapped, the
only way to do this was to
build an addition.
He said late in 1979,
council accepted the tender
of Refiinghaus Construction
Ltd. of Goderich, to build the
addition for 5227,480.
Mr. Sillery said some of
the groups now using the
centre include Bluewater
Centre for the Developmen-
tally Handicapped, the Gol-
den Circle School, Wingham,
Braemar Manor, Exeter, the
Huron County Stroke Club,
Wingham Mental Health
Centre and others. The reeve
added centre staff are now
investigating a program for
the mentally handicapped to
be offered at the Vanastra
Day Cara Centre.
The reeve said. -It's
through the efforts of a great
number of people that we've
come as far as we have
today.- He asked both Tuc-
kersmith Taw nship clerk
Jack McLachlan and recrea-
tion centre director Diane
