ViSittar$ OtitiOnes, SO far I'Ve talked ahent the trip fortn„
Mitnielt tilt'etigh,t 'Irene and Ittrkey. to Iran, Recently it'S
been ife'in Tehinn, and sct it wilt be this week. ,
'
On Of tbe most interesting days in Tehran Was a few
dayS•after we arrived when,,Magit hauled us and his family
off tit'dO sortie Visiting. The place was thehomeof Magit:s
brother-in-law, who -was a dOctor in Tehran. .
• We left fOr Our visit in late morning, and aside from the
,evening we arrived in Tehran, it was the tirgi time we'd
driven about the city with Magit. fie was proud to be
cruising in his.home town in his Mercedes Benz, and by
'the thne we arrived at the doctor's I sensed we had taken a
roundabeut route. That was Confirmed later when our
return trip was substantially shorter than our drive over.
Magithad gone 'cruising it turned out, taking advantage
of the outing to flash his wheels to the locals. It seemed to
me the viewers of this speciable would hardly be
impressed, with it. After all, N. hen you don't know when
your next meal is coming it is not likely you'd be impressed
by Magit's Mere. More likely is that the showy display was
resented, but the big M was probably content with that
reaction. lt would mean something to him.
--The-doctor 'S home -J.3.1; heu we -final ly-re-ach ect.it.,..was like
an oasis, iri the desert to us. The -outside featured finely
tailored gardens and lawns which prepara one for the
impressive interior,
Inside was plush carpeting: modern 'appliances and
furniture and even a television set, and in color, no less.
The house was modern. North Ambrican modern. that is.
That Made it impressive to me then, lt.was functional, but
equally unimaginative as many of the modern homes we
see about today, looking back.
The house, though, 'did pack one surprise. I mentioned
-when the trip was in Bulgaria that bathroom facilities and
habits amazed me. 'Easternwas thc way I described
them. When we arrived at Magit's house. I expected to
find a little western 'culture' in the form of a throne, but no
such luxury was there, (indeed. it was separate from the
' house, though, quite different from an outdoor prisy. It
even had running water.)
However, when we arrived at the doctor's hone I
thought I'd finally found the motherlode. The first clue
was that the bathroom had been part of the archeteciural
design of the house. The second clue was that the house
itself was reasonably modern.
I'd set myself up for a letdown. and sure enough, e, hen
the time came to pay my first visit (after beattng back an
urge to do a little reconnaissaneo there it ‘k as. that one

shower and sink. Some habits just can't be broken.
In spite,of the magnitude of this letdown. the day at the
doctor's was quite enjoyable. His wife prepared a huge
,feast which eventually turnectitself into a party. Between
the meal and the party though, there was a rest in front of
Th e' boob.
How vast was America's impact on Iranian society. you
may wonder. Well, the big news on the television that
night was a replay of the gartie in whiCh 0..1. Simpson
rysh,cd for his 2000th yard in one season. That. for me; was
an unexpected pleasure. but I doubt whether many
Iranians could see the significance.
There he was. the Juice, setting a record with every step
'he took. Each step was' -also bringikg him closer to a
glorious career in °second rate Hollywood movies. How
could anybody miss tile significance?
After all. football \\ as invented in Iran, wasnit it?. .
ljjniSt k'ncW the Juice Was. giving 'it 'that little bit extra
because he was sure wild throngs of Iranians woutd be
cheering hime on a week later.
lf I'd been able to. translate. I'm sure I would have heard
the Iranian commentator say."This. fellow countrymen, is
the acme of American culture."
• "What you are seeing." he would go on. is glorious
history in the making,".-
t'tnr, sultrolitrneli'eld as Much meaning for the others
In the living room as.a gatne'of cricket does for lite . then
again, it's 'probably more enjoyable than most of the
prpgramming they're getting now.
Later. much ,to the delight of Magit and his relativeS.
there was a Volleyball match televised live between China
and Iran. Delight dies quickly. especially after China set
about methodically destroying the home side. making. I'm
convinced; the locals wish Iran had never taken up the
sport.
They'd had enough and before the volleyball match was
over the boob was off and the party was on, As was often
the case the language barrier excluded us from the
festivities: although the be, koning waves of the hosts to
join in made it clear it \ av' I intentional.
While the family partied time was filled oath a hook.
That. I think. may be a lesson to parents who can't
convince their children of the ,benefits of reading. Send
them to a foreign country kir a few days with a good sulaply
of books. Slowly. they gain in appeal.
And the learning never ends.
. No digging
Lest week: s_answers: 1) Music -the name -of the song was -
was The Good Thing, by Talking Heads from their -More
Songs album. 2) Sports -This is a little tricky. The recbrd
for most wins by a Blue Jay pitcher is 13 and is shared by
Jim Clancy and Dave Lemanzcyk. Clancy is still with the
team. and I figured by this week he may have set the new
record. Actually, if he beat Tom Underwood and the
Vankees last night he will hold the record. Regardless, he
should set a new one before the end of the season.

_Legion honour -s -WW1 1 vets.-
Seaforth Legion members
have installed a new
Memorial Plaque in their hall
,to honour area veterans who
have died since returning
from the war in which they
served.
The names of area veter-
ans who have died since the
war are being inscribed in
bronze and mounted on a
memorial plaque displayed
in the Legion.
The branch already has
inscHbed the names of 179
veterans who have died since
the war. While the costs of
the memorial record are
being underwritten by the
branch, it's hoped next of kin
or friends of the deceased
veterans may wish to play.a
part iri the memorial pro-
gram.
The cost of the case and
memorial plaque is
estimated at 52500. While
donations will lessen the
financial ,burden on branch
members, the inclusion of a
veteran's name isn't depend-
. Remember, it take but a
moment to place an Ex-
