Variety spice of life
Albert Horner celebrates 90th
by Paul Ellis
At the age of 90 years, Albert Horner of
62 East William Street is still going strong.
Mr: Horner, born on the family farm
seven miles south of Byfield, near
Drysdale, came into the world July 17,'
1890. He lived on the farm and. attended
school in the area intil 1905. In 1907 he
enrolled in Westervelt Business College in
London, and graduated two years later.
....He toolt_a joh.with Guroey-Oxford Stove
and Furnitce Company in Toronto. as a
secretary and assistant bookkeeper. Part of
his job included- collecting overdue bills.
Mr. Horner left that company because,
as he puts it, "I soon didn't like the city'
life. I still liked the country life."
With this in mind. Mr. Horner moved
back to Bayfield in 1911 and purchased the
general store. Changing the name to the
.Horner.Inges General Store, the twenty-
one year old Mr. Horner ran the business
for ten years. In 1916, Mr: Horner married
Violet -May Rathwen of Varna, who then
helped him with purchasing at the store.
Part of Mr. Horner's operation of the
store included making three or four trips a
week to local farms by horse and wagon.
He would deliver goods needed by the
farrnersTwho usually didn't have the time
or the means to get into -the store. •
AUTOMOBILES POPULAR
As automobiles—started—to—become
popular in the area, Mr. Horner realized
that people would start travelling to larger
towns. or even to the cities. to shop. This
meant they would be bypassing the small
country stores. except for minor purchases.
Partly because of this. and partly because
he preferred farming over the business
life. Mr. Horner sold the -store in 1921.
Half u mile east of Varna was the next
Horner residence, on a 120 acre farm that
he tended for 28 years. An interesting
point that he remembers Is when the farm
was sold in 1948, cattle sold for 9c per
pound.
The next two years saw Mr. Horner
living in Exeter, working first for the
tanning factory and then later in a lumber
yard. Again tired of office jobs. Albert
moved to Seafortti an1...bought...a..95. acre
farm just east of town. After ten years. he
sold the farm in 1960 to the hospital board.
It is on that land that the Seaforth
Community Hospital is now located.
PRESENT HOME -
Retiring at the age of 70. Mr. and Mrs.
Horner 'moved to their present home on the
corner of East William and Franklin
Streets.
Mr. Horner, son of the late John William
Horner and Bertha Hey, has one brother,
Blake, and two sisters. His family has a
history of longevity, as his mother, and his
" sister Laura Inges, both died in their 100th
year. Albert's other sister, Myrtle Kruger,
now resides in Kitchener.
How does Albert stay in good shape?
The most important aspect. as faeas he is
concerned, is that, "you've go to keep
active." This he does. with walks uptown
everyday. "You meet a lot of people', and
.nothing does you more good."
-''I like to be out among the horses and
the cattle and the fresh air," says Mr.
Horner.
Although it may be a cliche. Mr. Horner
strongly believes that. "There's nothing.
like a home of your own. Like they say, be
it ever so humble. there's no placc like
home.
