BY PATIIICIA,
On the bus Ade °Vet to
Clinton last Friday for our
last day at school and our
• exam, everyone was discuss.
ing the exam, the Pigman
and algebra. On the way
back, the same group of
people tented about sleeping
In for the rest of the holidays.
'Yes I was one of a number of
students from SDHS who
took a course at 'summer
school to earn a lost credit or
" just for improvement.
On the first day; the bus
•ride over to Clinton high-
school- looked like an awful
lot of riding a a noisy bus:
Once we entered the class-
room .of strangers. (with the
exception -of, a .few -friends)
we were completely lost. We
sat there glancing,at a few of
the people around,us, as any
student does`on the first day
of school. Then we'd smile,
and say hello to a couple of
. people around us that we
recognized.
As the teacher entered, we
smiled and thought to our-
selves, "the next two hours
better be fast!" Well, the
first day did go quite quickly
and the bus ride home wasn't
so bad.
We were beginning to
remember some of the things
that we had learned at the
beginning of the year and
summer school 'Seemed real-
ly easy. The next day wasn't
so bad as We knew the people
around us a little more and
could talk to them if we
didn't undersfand some -
Four -letter -winds such as
test, exam and quiz were
very common now.
TOUR THE HALLS
On our ten minute break
we would tour the halls of
what seemed to be the big
Clinton high school, with our
new friends. We would dis-
teei*
tweens
cover coincidences ' such as
one of the Strangers is your
friend's best friend or the
fact that you used to go
skating with the girl across
the aisle. We would talk -and
laugh and meet more interes-
ting people. Mist people
looked at the buttercup in,
one of the classrooms that
was of interest to all. And
w -ho says -we -d-Oet-Tiken to
interesting things at school?
After finishing several
tests, most people „figured
that summer school was a
good deal. Most were getting
marks in the high seventies
and eighties at first. The
English class was reading
the novel Pigman and the
math class was taking the
basic algebra steps.
Math and English were not
the only 'classes offered at
summer school though.
There was driver education
-class-for 'those trying to get
their licence, an English
class for, the Vietnamese
people who., are learning to
communicate with the people
around Seaford' and a Math-
Engllsh class for thae)going
intoJgrades seven, eight and
nine There were also science
and History classes.
Many people went to sum-
mer school because ,they
were not able to get a eredit
this year. They gave up their
summer so they would be
able to catinue their school
work successfully neat year.
Others, such as myself, went
to school to review what they
had learned during the
school year so that their
minds would be fresh for
next year. They too could use
the better of their two marks
for their school record.
' A QUIET BUS
For the firstlittle while the
bus ride was still quiet. Bit
once we began- to know our
new friends betterwe could •
talk all of the way home. The
'driver education 'course ad
-the Math and Knglish
courses only lasted for a ;
short time so the bus became •
quiet. The homework 'started" ;
to load up and the exam day •
was getting closer. •
•
Often people would stop •
me on the street and ask me
if I was getting "ready for •
school in the fall. This was a •
real problem for me because ;
I kept thinking to myself •
"I'm not even finished ;
•
•
•
•
to pay for lots of new friends,
a good education ad possib-
ly a credit that you wouldn't
have otherwise.

school, so why do I hafve to
think about school?" The bus
would drop us off at the
public school, uptown or any
where else on the route. It
was easy to see that summer
school was well worth the
