How's everyone? I'm not auite at lost as the
letterhead would suggest! In fact I'm about
two hours out of the port of Travemunde in
northern German -y on my wayl to Malmo in
southern Sweden. We should arrive in the
morning about eight.
This past week has been busy and filled
with much movement as usual. I spent
another. day in St. Maio on the beach and
exploring the port and offshore islands.
Mao saw; Jacques Cartier's tomb in the
cathedral there. On Thurs. I hitched back
into Paris and spent that evening and
Friday with Patrick and Eve just joking
around finishing up some business and as
always with Patrick, eating well! On
Saturday, I went to Reims (rhymes in
France') to see the cathedral where all the
Kings of France were crowned and then
headed for the border to make iny big
departure from France...1 shed a tear (in my
heart. at least) as we crossed into
Luxembourg and left France behind.
.. Yesterday morning in Luxembourg. I
was picked up by a German couple who had
just put their two teenagers; on a plane for a
six week trig of Canada and the United
States. With their non-existent English and
my very skaky German, we managed to get
along really well and they took me half the
way up Germany to Braunschweig (just
east of Hanover) where they wined and
dined me and put me up for the night in
their very luxurious house. They set me
back on the. Auto-Bahn (like the 401) this
morning and 1 continued the last 500km in
a series of Mercedes and VW's - How
typically German! The hitchhiking is
excellent in Germany and, as there is no
speed limit on the Auto-Bahn (most of the
time about 150 km/hrl) you can really
make good timel
Tomorrow I'll hitch across Sweden to Stoc-
holm on the east coast, I'll probably spend
a day there and take a night ferry to Turku
in southern Finland. Timo is expecting me
in Helsinki on Thursday. The weather
continues to be absolutely atrocious
apparently it's general throughout Europe
although there are rumours that it gets
better the farther north one is - hope so! It
has rained 6 out of the last seven days -
amd not just little drizzles but all day
downpours! Oh well. can't CoMplain as
I wouldn't want to be anywhere else' . ,
. That's it for now I'm going se curl up on
my little corner of the ship's lounge for a,
few hours sleep.
Hope all is going well with house and
farm! Bye 'til -next week.
'Paesday, 22.07.80
Hello - Greetings from Finland! I have
finally arrived! I got to Turku on Thursday
norning as planned and hitch -hiked into
Helsinki by noon - so from Paris (which I
left Sat. noon) to Helsinki it took exactly 5
days almost completely by hitchhiking. As
Timo wasn't expecting me 'til Fri. and was
still out at the Summer house (where I am
now), I spent a day and a half looking
around Helsinki which is. a very beautiful
19th century town. 1 say "town" as it really
gives that impression ' being quite
small (500,000) for a nat'l capital and
somewhat out of the way. Some of the
highlights of the tour were the Olympic
Stadium (1952), Finlandia Hall (where the
Helsinki couference was held and the pact
signed) and Uspensky Church (the first
time I had been in a Russian Orthodox
Church). As Finland was, until 1917, a part
of the Russian Empire and is still its only
non -socialist neighbour, the Russian in-
fluence is quite strong.
On Fri. night I met Timo at his house in
one of the small towns (Grankulla) outside
the city that form the metropolitan area. It
was really good to see him again and to
hear his tales of his 6 wks. of travel from
which he is just back. Their house is also a
real delight. Mr. Gunst owns a rather large
architecture firm, is quite a well known
architect, and their house certainly shows
it. Of aourse Finland is known as the centre
vat' modern architecture (T.Q.,citx hallis by
a Finn) and their house is, • at once.
striking. practical, and comfortable.
We spent Sat. biking around the
Helsinki area whichbecause all the towns
are joined by kilometres of forest, is just
like biking in the country side. On Sund..
we brought the • boat out here to the
cottage. This is really paradise on earth!
It's located on a tiny island in the
archipelago of the Bay of Finland (the
Russian border is jest 10 km away further
out to sea). The cottage is quite beautifttl
(Mr.- G. designecLit too) but it is quite
rustic as there is neither electricity nor
•plumbing. Our only source of hot water is
the sauna - the most wonderful creation -
which we take every night. The sauna is -a --
small wood -lined room with a stove
covered with heat -collecting stones. When
water is poured on the stones, the temp.
jumps to as. high as 900.0 and one sweats
like the proverbial "hen drawing rails".
After.15 or 20 min.' in there during which
the usual practice is to slap oneself witti
birch . branches (sounds horrible, feels
gyeat), we all make a mad dash for the
ocean and plunge into the cold water - the
Ideal is to roll in snow but that is lacking at
the moment! We then go beak in and have
a thorough washing and another 20 min. of
, baking. The prooess is finished with a OlaSe
ifitOld water and a bottle of beer on the
patio. I know it sounds lite torture but I
have never felt so clean nor so fresh and
invigoratel. We take one every night.
We have spent our days doing not much
of, anything • some swimming, sailing,
rewing & visiting the other islands- all in
all the perfect holiday.
Have to cut this short as we're taking the
boat now to go to the Plait Office-. -trope all
is Well at home. When Is the Reunion - fay
