(Photo by Oke) Odds n' ends by Elaine Townshend The 30's club tilv that I've reached another so-called milestone in life, I can sit back and reflect on all I've learned...There...that didn't take long. Take heart all new members of the exclusive -30s club. If we believe the song that was popular a couple of years ago, we're not getting older; we're getting better. I've decided to take the advice of a birthday card. I'm not thinking of it as middle age; I'm thinking of it as prime time. (The card came from a sixteen -year- old. Who else would dare to suggest 30 might be middle age?) Another card came in the form of an insurance policy which entitles me to the right to finagle, lie, evade and kibbutz about my age to my heart's content. (I've been doing that for years, 1 kibbutzed about my age so often I almost forgot the truth.) When I was twenty, I kidded people who were thirty about being older than I was., with emphasis on the 'old.' Funny, now that I've reached the milestone they were at, it doesn't seem as old as when I was looking at it from the milestone of twenty. Understand? Futhermore the people who are forty now don't seem much older than me, and I don't feel much older than the ones who are twenty. Understand that? One of the mysteries 9f, milestones is that. when you get there, the mystery is gone. Being thirty feels just the same as being twenty-nine or thirty-one. We attach great importance to mile- stones of ageas we go through life. How anxiously kids wait for the magic age of thirteen when they enter teendom, the age of acne, self-consciousness and pretending we're having a swell carefree time while in reality we're wondering if we'll survive. When we turn twenty, we know we've made it. Sixteen was a bonus if a driver's licence came with it, and eighteen was the age voting, drinking and seeing X-rated movies became legal. My peers and I had to wait an extra three years for the latter. When we reached the age of twenty-one, the legal age was lowered to eighteen. With indignation, we watched those eighteen, nineteen and twenty -year-old 'children' lining up at the polling booths. When we filially reach the age we can do all the things we thought we wanted to do, we realize they're not that thrilling. In retrospect. I've changed my ideas about certain things not once but several times as the years went by, and I've learned a few things. For example, most people over thirty are trustworthy; people over forty arc not over the hill; people over fifty are not senile, and people over sixty know more than I do because they've had i longer time to experience life. I can learn from them. if I just take time to listen. I also realize I didn't know everything when 1 was twenty-one or twenty-five. I'm still learning and I always will be. That's one of the exciting parts of every milestone of -life. We're tightening up on people who abuse Unemployment Insurance. Most people getting unem- ployment insurance play by the rules. But some people don't seem to know that they can't take a job and collect benefits without telling us they're working. Thafs why employers are being asked to send us the starting date and Social Insurance Number or extracts from computer payroll tapes for each employee they hire or rehire. This information is cross- checked with the Social Insurance Numbers of people receiving unemployment insurance benefits. Only cases of potential abuse wlli ever surface. After inves- tigation, anyone found receiving benefits to which they are not entitled will have to repay them. • It may be an honest mistake.
