STAYING IN SHAPE—Lynn Devereaux, of 25 Goderich Street West,
, started logging eight years ago to "ger into shape," and last weekend
she won first in the women's open category in the Goderich 10km Classic.

Those runners
Lynn Devereaux is off and running.
Lynn was among the more than 150
runners who competed in the Goderich
Recreation- Department's 10 km race
Saturday. What set het out from the crowd
was that this Seaforth athlete was the first
female to cross tfie finish line. -
With eight years of running in her
background. Mrs. Devereaux says, "1
enjoy it. . . going out for a run. It relaxes
me when 1 get home." Although she
started running to get in shape and to
lose weight". Lynn entered her first
organized race two years ago, and since
then has placed second in., Landon and
Windsor.
"1 enjoyed the race. It was a good race,
and it was a good day. There was a nice
breeze. I felt good running. Somedays you
go out and you just don't feel like running.
Before the race, 1 ate lots of carbohydrates"'
and built up my strength."
Whatever it was. Lynn certainly
managed to put it all together to finish the
Godetic8 tOttn aassic with a titte of 38
minutes 48 seconds.
Long distance foot racing isn't the only
sport that interests Lynn. She is a part time
fitness instructor; running courses in
Vanastra and Seaforth in the fall and
winter. She also -plays in the ladies
recreational softball league, and on the
Seaforth Ladies' soccer team. In the
winter, Mrs. Devereaux plays broombill
for the Queens club.
Lynn's husband, Tom, is a local
chiropractor. In recent years, many
physicians have spoken oft about the
dangers involved in jogging and funning.
But a.ccording to Lynn, her husband thinks
that it is fine for her to run as she does,
although he warns her against ruhninuin
pavement. The practice of jogging on a
hard surface, sub as a paved roadway, can
lead to a variety Of piheal injuries.
Several other local athletes ajso
competed in the Goderich Classic. fark
Underwood, who has proven his running
abilities in high school cross country.
. finished 121h overall in the race with a time
of just more than 33 minutes. This was
Matk's first long distance race. making his
ccoeflishment well worth noting. Abit
more experience should lead Mark into the
top ten. .
John Ball. featured in an. earlier
Sportalk. beat his goal of finishing in under
40 minutesby submitting a time of 39:29.
John's youngest son Andy came up with a
time of 46:40, making him second among
the boys..foltaved by brother Mike. The
only daughter in the family, 13 year old
Susan, crossed the finish line just metres
ahead of Mike.
The Goderich event was the first '
cempetitott for Mike, who has only been
running seriously since June. He waS a
late starter in the family, because, as he
puts it. "1 didn't like it (running) very
much, but once 1 got into it, it was OK."
He adds that he was jealous becau se his
parents. sister and younger brother had
entered a race in Waterloo in early June,
'hit.
and he had been ft out.
The only menib of the Ball family not
presently active ' the long distance
running is June, mother of the group. She
developed knee problems as a result of the
Waterloo race, and has curtailed her
running until the fall. In the mean time,
she is swimming every., day to, keep in
shape. .
Bill Kunz, who occasionally jogs with
John Ball during his daily five mile run,
also entered the Goderich race, although
he finished well back inthe pack.
There is one important thing that allows
all these people to compete, and some- •
times even to win. They try. Do yon?
