this year is 26 mills.

Patch set the world's pacing record a
notch lower by pacing a mile in 1.55

-The attendance at the Goderich
Collegiate Institute so far this term
numbers about 140, a less number than
last year.
-The tax rate in St. Marys for this
year is 251:; mills. There are many towns
in which the tax rate is higher than in
Wingham. -
-Wingham's fall fair on Thursday
and Friday, Sept. 27 and 28. Make
your entries early with the Secretary at
the TIMES office.
-Keep Friday evening, Sept. 28th
open for the fall fair concert, (Victor's

-A cow belonging to Mr. Wylie, near
Belgrave was killed by the _ morning
express train from London.
-Make your entries for fall fair early
with the Secretary at the TIMES office.

-The Secretary has already received
a number of entries for Wingham's
fall fair to be held on Sept. 27 and 28.
-Mr. F. Patterson has been awarded
the contract of building the new side-
walks on Carling Terace and commenc-
ed the work this week.
-Mr John Galbraith is having his
dwelling on Edward street veneered
with briok. This will make a great im-
provement to the property,
-Mr. R. N. Barrett has moved his
barber shop fixtures to the store fitted
up for him next to Nicholls' bakery.
Mr. Barrett will now have a first-class
shop.
-Mr, and Mrs. Robt. Stapleton, near
Zetland are mourning the loss of their
infant daughter, who died on Tuesday `
evening. They will have the sympathy
of numerous friends.
-The Seaforth Milling Co. has again
opened the Gregory storehouse and are
prepared to pay the highest prices for all
kinds of grain. Mr. John Elder is again
in charge of the elevator.

-Mr. Alex. Kelly of Turnberry met
with a painful accident one day last
week by being kicked in the side by a
horse. Mr. Kelly was injured so badly
that ho has since been confined to his bed.
r --We have had semo very warm weath-
ter during the past week. Very' Wattle
for September. Last Friday, Toronto
was the hottest place in Ontario, the'
thermometor registering ninety degrees.
-Angus McFee, who was raised near i
Teeswater and Iived there for a number
of years was killed in one of his mines
in Colorado a few weeks ago. Deceased
was a cousin of Miss M. McLean, of this
town.
-Messrs Lott & King will sell by
public auction at Exchange hotel, on
Tuesday, Sept. 25th, some twenty heavy
draught colts, one, two and three years
old. This is a fine lot of young horses.

-From Tuesday's London Free Press
we learn the engagement is announced
of Mise Laurel Corbould, eldest daugh-
ter of the late W. Corbould of this town
to Mr. E. L. Dickinson, barrister, of
Goderich, also formerly of Wingham.
-Mr. Murdock McLeod caught an ex-
tra large black bass in the Maitl and on,
Monday. The fish measured 20 inches
and weighed 3i pounds. This -makes the
third black bass caught this season
by Mr. McLeod that measured over 19
inches.
-While in Leamington last week Mr.
S. Gracey sold his dwelling in that place
and has since had his home fitted up
hero and Mre. Gracey and family are ex-
pected in town this week. The many
friends of the family will be pleased to
welcome them back to Wingham.
-Mr. Robt Johnston has been busy
all this weep fitting up his doable store
for his boot and shoe. business, Mr.
Johnston will now have a fine store.
Hie fall and winter stock is arriving and
with the increased space he will be able
to show it to mach better advantage.
---Mr. George Green of Goderich ham
issued a writ against the Canadian Mail
Order Co. and Mr. J. T. Timor of Toronto
to recover $500 which, he alleges, was
secured from him by misrepresentation.
He also sakes for the cancellation of
oertain shares of etock in the company.
-W-Mr. Gavin Wilson, on Monday last
met with a painful aoeident, While halt.

been visiting for a few days with friends

'Miss Baer has returned home after
spending her holidays iu Toronto, Lon-
don and Woodetook.
Reeve Sloan and Mrs. Sloan of Blyth
were visiting there daughter, Mrs. W.
W, Walker last week.
Mr. and Mrs. Ohms. Ross, of Chicago
are visiting with the former's parents,
Mr. and Mrs. 1. Rosa.
Mr. and Mrs. S A Greenfield and little
daughter, of Mount Clements, Mich. are
visiting at the home of H. B Elliott.
Mr. Taos, Armstrong for a number of
years a resident of town left this week
with hie family for Calgary, where they
intend residing. They will have the best
wishes of numerous Wingham friends.
Miss Cassie Harris, of Wroxeter has
taken a position in the Carey Dry Goods
Co's store. Miss Harris has numerous
friends in Wingham who will be pleas-
ed to hear of her coming to town to re-
side.
Passenger trains may be running on
the James Bay Railway within two
weeks.
Win McGregor of Parham, aged six
years, was accidentally elicit by his
brother and killed.
Mrs Louisa Smith of St. Thomas, ar-
rested on a charge of murdering her
daughter's infant, admitted giving the
child poison.
Richard Ford, a respectable mechanic
of Bowmanville, was waylaid on his
way home and robbed, beaten and had
hot tar poured over him.
Mr. Jacob Koehler's fine bank barn,
one mile south of Zurich, was burned to
the ground. Tho season's threshed grain
with hay and straw, is a total loss. Im-
plements and stock saved. Mr. Koehler
noticed smoke pouring out through the
roof at 8 o'clock Saturday morning. The
origin of the fire is a mystery. The loss
is heavy. Insured in the Hay Mutual
