The weather was vett' aelemdrnt as
it rained constantly and a cold wind
whipped throught the stadium.
However, neither was enough to
dampen the. spirits of our young
athletes. Competition was keen as
our young reps competed against
Eckert, Lucas McMillan, Cindy
Caner. Michael Herbert, Andrea
Gingerich, Carla Dalton, Jason
Henderson, Marcy McCall, Steven
Leonhardt and Vicki Lansinf.
Ribbons went to Monica Ryan, 2nd

McMillan, 6th Bantom Boys Triple

We should be proud of all our
athletes. They all worked to the best
of their abilities and gave a 100%
effort. They also acted in a very
mature manner and represented
Seaforth Branch 156 with the
utmost pride and dignity. Thank
you, athletes, for your participation.
Hope to see you again next year.

PRAIRIE EXCURSION
Alphonse and Betty Grenier
Hensall and Adam and Wanda
'(Wilson of Brucefield, returned
recently from a very exciting trip to
the Western Provinces.
Their first stop was Cardiff,
Saskatchewan where Wanda and
Betty(Baker) were born. They
visited their parents; old homestead
for the first time since moving to
Hensall 58 years ago with their
parents Robert and Clara Baker and
nine children.
Maurice Bayliss, a friend who they
met while in the area, showed thein
his 300 acre ranch. He has 100

ad of cattle plus 300 Perche
ares, colts and stallions. Th
ranch tour took three hours.
Coyotes are so plentiful that they
can take the newborn colts away
from the mothers if the men aren't
there to stop them right after the
mother foals.
There are so many gophers that
two retired farmers are able to
shoot as many as 500 in one day.
In this manner, the gopher
population is controlled.
The foursome motored from
Cardiff to Banff and Lake Louise
and enjoyed the breath taking
mountain scenery. While in the
mountains they saw deer, elk,
buffalo and a black bear.
On the way home, an enjouable
day was spent in Frankenmuth,
Michigan.
ron Some of the Hensall, Clinton and
e Seaforth Baker families travelled to
Aylmer June 17. The special
occassion was the 55th wedding
anniversary of the oldest Baker
brother and sister-in-law, Glen and
Ametta Baker of Dashwood.

woman said she felt it was ironic
that for Earth Day school children
were given seedlings to plant and
then there is a proposal to destroy
trees. Another woman said she felt
the offer of the remaining land to
the town was a generous offer and
for 36 years she has taken walks in
the woods. She said her main con-
cern is environmental, yet she could
see the doctors' wish for a return
on their investment.
One man said he would like to
see some consideration to extending
some of the streets north through
the woodlot to Duke Street. One
woman said she always supported
the doctors', application to amend
the official plan. She said she
would like to take this offer now
before developers come in 10 years

tyranny flying high, front, and
centre, through mud, blood, and the

The sons and daughters of those
flags paid dpaely for that right.
You maybe assured Linda, the
people flying those flags, that
disturbed you so much, know
exactly the Country they are living
in, and what's more they know how
to keep this Country Canadian.

and totally destroy the woodlot.
In explaining the MVCA objec-
tion to the proposed official plan
amendment Mr. Beard said, "The
problem with this plan is that
opening the woodlot by cutting
without ecological expertise will not
result in the best way to develop
the land. We are concerned the
proposed development may result in
a substantial decline in the health
and viability of the entire woodlot.
This has occurred in other woodlots
where development was permitted
to locate at high densities and
without appropriate design. Usually
within five years many of the trees
will die."
"Seaforth is unique in having a
mature woodlot in town. It's impor-
tant to make good land use

decisions now, and there's not
enough information in this plan to
tell us if this is wise land use.
Therefore it's premature for us to
approve the plan. It should be
looked at by a forest ecologist and
landscape architect and then as-
sessed."
Mr. Beard pointed out the plan
does not provide any technical
infonnation on the impact such a
development would have on the
woodlot. He stressed the importance
of having a forest ecologist par-
ticapate in the planning and help
decide where the lots should be cut.
When asked why the MVCA
couldn't do the ecological as-
sessment themselves, Mr. Beard
said that the MVCA has had budget
cutbacks too and there is no one
with those qualifcations on staff.
Someone at the meeting said that
we could go and spend $60,000 and
have an assessment done, or accept
the plan and offer of the woodlot.
Not accepting the proposal could
result in the matter going before the
OMB for a hearing.
The committee of council will
make recommendations on amen-
ding the official plan to Seaforth
council at the town's next meeting
July 10. If the official plan is
amended, and re -zoning to residen-
tial is passed by Seaforth council,
there will be another public meeting
before the re -zoning becomes of-
ficial. If there are objections at the
second public meeting the matter
could be refered to the OMB.
