Liaison committee:
input for waste plan
BY PAULA 13LLIOIT
A public liaison committee, made
up of a cross-section of Herron
County residents, is waiting in the
wings as the County's Waste
Management master plan winds
down its Stage 2A.
Pebtic meetings were held in
Henan and Blyth in March when
the County unveiled Stage 2A of
the master plan, a poem of
elimination which idegtifed pos-
sible areas for the location of a new
landfill site in Minn County. The
search for a Crew site was launched
about two years ago when present
sites began to fill up.
The steeamg committee for the
waste management plan, which has
been meeting regularly
second Tuesday of the month, will
be hearing feedback from the
liaison committee regarding the
planning process. As the ears and
of the communities that are -
by dee waste management
plan, they will assist in involving
the public more in the planning
process, as well as commenting
di<eclty on the steering committee's
past and fortis considerations.
The committee will also hold
their own monthly meetings, which
will be open to the public.
Jo -Mme Richter, coordinator for
the waste management master plan,
noted that although a cross-section
of county residents expressed
interest in sitting on the liaison
committee, ,"there are a few
noticeable g ls:" '
Response was "heavy in the
central area," she indicated, adding
that no liaison cine volunteers
replied from either the Seafortb or
McKillop Township area. (One of

the larger potential site areas high-

Management Plan was in the corder
of MCKiliop Township, and a num-
ber of attendees at the Hensall
pbibic meeting raised concern over
it). The positions were advertised
across fieri County. and all volun-

placement on the comminee.
The steering committee met on
Tuesday June 12, to appoint the
liaison board members. Names were
naval -table as of press time, but
wi l be officially released later this
week.
The master plan is in hiatus at the
moment, waiting for final coan-
nwnts to come bads from the
government on Stage 2A, which
wrapped up in March.
"it's been a long, long haul for
that one," Jo -Anne Richter com-
mented, although she anticipates no
problems with it being passed.
"I don't think that we're going to
have to do any major changes,"
she added.
"We got very good input on the
areas that we did identify."
Concerns to be tackled in the next
stage of the waste management
process will include the pinpointing
of an est site, or sites, for county
landfill, and the shouldering of the
responsennty tor( meirmanagement.
Bill 201 gives the county the ability

for the tong -term care of closed
