"Through its current policy review, the federal government is working to establish an affordable safety net system that can cope with unforeseen circumstances while offering producers greater certainty about future levels of support," he continued. "This should eliminate the need for ad hoc assistance in the future." "It is vital that Ontario farmers get some relief to alleviate the severe financial stress many are wider. I am pleased that the government of Ontario could work in cooperation with its federal counterpart to provide that assis- tance," Mr. Ramsay said. "This re -arms our commitment toward maintaining a viable and sustainable agriculture industry in Ontario." The assistance package will cover income losses for the 1990 calendar year. The Grains and Oilseeds Safety Net Committee, set up as part of the policy review, is preparing concrete recommen- dations on the implementation of a long-term safety net program in time for the 1991-92 crop year. The announcement of the short- term assistance agreement comes after a meeting of federal and provincial ministers of agriculture m Toronto, May 18, where agreement in principle was reached on the overall allocation of funds and cost-sharing.
