price war. They each subsidize
their farmers to get the markets,
but we are supposed to do without
subsidy and accept a price low
enough for our produce to compete
with the world price. I hope that
our agricultural community sur -
vives to the point that Canada can
be always self-sufficient in food
production for our people.
When the truckers got, together
and blocked the borders, it teek:olr
ly several days for the government, •
to announce that they had set up a,
definite meeting between the
Minister of Transportation and'
representatives of the trucking in-
dustry to address and solve the'
problem. When are we, as farmers,
going to get together and use the
political power that we could have
through solidarity to get our "level
playing field"?
FOOD FOR THOUGHT- The Seaforth Co -Op held a benefit breakfast on
May 12 in conjunction with the grand opening of the Co -Op greenhouse.
The Seaforth Optimists cooked for the occasion, filling plates with pan-
cakes, eggs and bacon, and Lois Scoins of the Co -Op returned the favour
by presenting a plateful of cash to Optimist president Don Hoffman. The
$258.50 will go towards Optimist youth projects in the corhmunity. Elliott

'STILI: ON THE TOPIC OF
TRUCKING
A There seem to be some new rules
, and safety regulations concerning
Ontario farm vehicles and trucks. I
don't know .what they are, but
there is a meeting in the OMAF
Boardroom, Clinton on Monday,
June 18,1990, at 8:30 PM where
Dennis .Harris of the Ministry of
Transportation will explain the new
laws and answer questions. It is a
regular HCFA members meeting,
but all people are welcome.
Perhaps I'll see you there.
Safety Seekers present . skits
On May 18, 1990 at 7:30 p.m. the'
second 4H meeting of the Farm
Safety Club was held at the home;
of Gerda Vanden Hoven. Thirteen
Seaforth Safety' Seekers. were
present.
The meeting started with the 4-H
pledge. Barbara Wynja read the
minutes' of the last meeting and
they were adopted as read. The
role call was 'name one of the new
safety conaldierations you have
learned."
Tanya Vansteelandt, the junior
leader, did a. presentation on dead-
ly gases. She had three bottles, one
with a rotten egg to smell like
manure, another with air to smell
like carbon dioxide and the third:
with ammonia to smell like manure
gas. -
Members divided into smaller
groups and put on survival skits.;
Some took place in silos, qtain
bins, grain wagons, or in a waters
well.

The Town of Seaforth,
in conjunction with the Ministry of Housing,
has funds available
to help conserve and improve existing housing,
In the Town of Seaforth.
O.H.R.P. offers financial incentives to homeowners liv-
ing in their own properties. The program is aimed at
rehabilitating sub -standard homes„with an emphasis on
faulty structural and sanitary conditions, as well as, the
upgrading of plumbing, insulation, heating and electrical
systems.
A system of loans (repayable and forgivable) to pay for
the property rehabilitation is available to owner -occupants
whose "adjusted family income” does not exceed $21,000.
The maximum amount of loan available is $7,500, of which
up to $4,000 may be forgiven. The interest rate on the
repayable portion is geared to family income (0% for those
under $5,000, up to 10% over $16,000).
Persons wishing to improve their homes should contact
the undersigned, to further discuss the details of the
program:
