the day when a second group of
hikers came across it.. Principal
Jim Empringham and a group of
-theboys managed to corral it into
an aquarium for observation at the
centre.
Other teachers who went along
on the program were Mrs. Doig,
Miss Delaney and Mr. Ritchie.
An evaluation of the enrichment
:excursion was handed in by about
I30 participating students, and all
reports came back glowing.
They were all keen and enthus-
ed," Mr. Orin reports. "Really,
there was nothing negative - about
the worst thing that they could
complain about was the the
blackflies"
DEFYING THE BLACKFLIES - Although Andrea Moore (left) was swaddled in sweat-
shirt to keep out the blackflies at Celtic, Debbie Nolan and Kate Popple don't look
too worried at all. Andrew Kennedy photo.
In between catching colds and
catching rattlesnakes, the group of
Grade 11 students from Seaforth
District High School who travelled
to the Celtic Sports and Arts camp
for, a three-day learning enrichment
program actually did learn
soittething
I! arty -two, ; students and five
teachers left for the Bruce Penin
-sub camp sentpe, locate4 near
Lions Beall, 'oh unday- May:t13:.
Aimed at providing; the Students
with . an environmental and
academic learning experience in a
unique• setting, the trip is being
heralded as a success by all involv-
ed.
nvolyed. David Onn, one of the teachers
who has spearheaded the Learning
Enrichment program at the school
over the past few years, notes that
this is the -first year that 'the
students have been taken to Celtic.
The success of the program bodes
well for next year's Grade 11 class
to do the same., •
"I know a lot- of Grade 11's who
would want to ge away again in
Grade 12," Mr. Onn smiles.
Whether the enrichment program
Will 'be a go again for 1990-91 will
depend largely on the wishes of the
incoming principal in September.
`t$ see a I lot of value in it,"
remarks Mr. Onn "I know that the
kid certainly liked it."
'here was a good turnout for the
trip, with .only 15 or so Grade 11
students not attending. Over the
three-day ' program, the students
were ditiided trite two groups of 21
and participated in organized ac-
' tivitiea from 6:45 in the morning
until 11 at night. In the inorntatg,
one group would take part in an in-
tensive three-hour session while the
other would rotate around to three
one-hour workshops. In the after-
noon, the groups would flip-flop. An
hour of free time, "beach time",
was allowed in the taken
and
.the eirMiirigs were taken up with
group cooperative games, camp-
firesand windsurfing. The entire
group was taken on a: cave explora-
tion expedition , on the Wednesday
morning.
"This was an attempt to involve
everyone," points out Mr. Onn.
"The kids who don't often excel in
things were given a chance to .get
together and work. with people that
they might not otherwise."
Cooperation among the students
in a different educational setting,
one of the goals of -the learning'
program, was very, much in
evidence.
"Everybody was pretty good
abofirsooking after each other. It
was a ,real -camp ?experience," says.
Mr. Onn.
One of the high points of the trip
Was the capture of a rattlesnake on
a nature hike. The snake, a docile
Soul, was spotted by Celtic -camp
leader Tim Mathieson on one hike
and was in the same, spot later fn
