To the Editor, •
Never in recent history has the need. for •
world peace been more acute and seeming-
ly within man's grasp. Today our world is
troubled with strife in the Middle East,
South America and Africa. There is major
civil unrest in Eastern and Central Europe,
Chma and in many other countries. Soviet
leader Gorbachev has proposed a new
Europe to be run on democratic principles.
Over the past year a renewed association
has developed between the Soviet Union
and the Roman Catholic Church. Will Gor-
bachev and the -Pope be able to achieve
peace? Will peace be universal, -providing
justice, security and goodwill among
mankind?
The Bible's clear answer to -these, qtlei37,
tions is: NO. Peace cannot be achieved
human organizations, be they politicai or
religious. Peace can only come !OM, Oa
When Jesus (the true Prince of Peace)
returns to the earth, then univeratil lasting
peace will be established. The Bible tells
of a time of peace unimagined by man.
Isaiah the proPhet predicted that disarme-
r' ment will be So thorough that "men will
beat their 'sFords ,into ploughshares and
their spears into pruning hooks, nation will
not lift up sword against nation, neither
shall they. learn war anymore." God's
peace will "wipe away every tear from
their eyes, and death shall be no more,
neither shall there be mourning, nor cry-
ing; nor pein any more." (Rev. 21) We

I went down to the Sperling Brothers Cir-

help but get the feeling that there was a
whole other ,side to things that the three-
ring flash would never hint at; I wandered
behind the arena after the show, where the
tents and trailers were parked for the
night.
There I met a man who not only show-
ed me another side of the circus, but who
tv'isted my whole outlook of life in a

15 years earlier, he told me. Schact - an
ex -pastor, I learned, who still owns an
evangelistic trailer park in Alabama -
spoke with real love for the giant 'beast. I
got the impression that Phil heath Dondi
much as anyone else would treat a dog or
cat What difference does a few extra thou-
sand pounds make?
Why an elephant, I asked Schact.
"We were getting too old - and too fat --
to be aerialists any more," he answered
with a laugh. As it turns out, Schact and
his wife had lived the great childhood fan-
sy and run away to join the circus - a
year after they were married.
You see, Phil Schact told me, when- he
and Francine were only married a short
while, they were both working two jobs at
once. They never had a chance ki see each
other. 'They knew that therehed to be
another way to live, a better way.
That way turned out to be the circus life.
It's perfect, he said with a quiet smile.
They're doing 'what they love to do, and
they have all the 'time in the world to
spend tvitberieh other and with their son.
"The, family unit is 'terribly stressed
right now - and that's' one thing that I like
about circus life," Schact noted.
This made me smile. What a sideways
way to look at lifestyles, and what a
refreshing view it was. Lately, 'stability'
has been the key word when talking about
families, and too often stability is defined
as the house in the suburbs, 9105 full-time
jobs and giving your children a steady,
=ailed home life. But Phil Schact and
his family are turning this theory
Upside-down.
And I don't think that I've ever met a
happier man.
I left Phil, Josh and Dondi to visit
awhile before the next show started, while
Francine caught up on some sleep in the
trailer. I thanked him for his time.
"Thank you," he replied with a warm
smile and a wave. "And God bless you."
God bless you too, Phil Schact, wherever
you and your family are tonight.
