suggested'that the petitioners be invited to
their next meeting to discuss the sign, The
petitioners met . with the committee in
council cbauibers, where Mr. Lemon gave
a presentaiion'on.the proposed project.; He
and the committee listened to the response

ran out from between parked cars near the
crosswalk as an,:18-wheel truck approach-

the child but coining to a stop on a

heiPe'd the truck' back onto the road.
To the east of Mrs. Haley's property is
the site offormer gas station,. which is
now schoolubeard property. There is no
sidewalk, or built up curb, where the gas
station was,• but rather a blacktop that
drivers use as parking spaces. The school
yard is used I after school and some
children dive had closecalls at that time.
Petitioners also, voiced concern ever the
actual size of tthe sign, saying it would be
much Wail- than planned. After building
lip• the groend St the base of the sign it
wouldlreach about' seven feet in height. In
front f of the sign there are plans for a
fowerbed, followed by'54 shrubs in front of
the signs ;and ,two trees behind it. Te ac-
commodate the sign and landscaping two

Peg .Campbell asked everyone present
for suggestions or a _decision for relocation.
She said 'the curb could be built up at the
blacktop ,to discourage drivers from park-

"I thought it was a kid playing a joke.
Then I saw a red thing bobbing in and out
of the water," Mr. Labbate said.
"It was a definite cry for help," Mrs.
Labbate said, "I only wish we could have
done more. But it's unfortunate they were
hi' that water."
Cars'and people lined Lower Shore Road
near the accident scene located at the west
end of concession 12•.of Huron Township,
south of the boiler. Bystanders on the
beach could see the Russell T rescue boat
in `the distance and the OPP launch boat
easing into shore with one body on its deck
and another being dragged in the water by
an officer. Two ambulance officers and
several OPP officers anxiously waited on
the beach oblivious to the large crowd
building behind them.

"We Net want the town, to clean;;and

replaced as it's in. bad shape."
The petitioners asked the cost of the pro-
ject and Peg Campbell said the committee
didn't .know but that infoiarration would be
in the; newspaper.. Mr. Lemon said the pro-
ject will be funded 50 per cent by the pro-
vince ':through a PRIDE grant ,that is
available to Seaforth before December 31,
1990. The sign construction will beadver-
Used for tenders in the newspaper and the
petitioners said they hoped the, work will
be awarded to a member of the
community.
Later in the meeting the committee talk-
ed about the project to erect entrance
signs in Seaforth. Two existing signs, at
the north and south ends of town, are to be
cleaned, repainted and have planter boxes
and lights installed. An east entrance sign
is being considered on Seaforth Coilununi-
ty Hospitalgrounds and will look similar
to the west entrance sign. Another sign,
similar to the east and west signs, is be-
ing considered at the main intersection of
town.
Peg Campbell said in an interview that
situations need not become so extreme.
Council and committee meetings are
advertised and open to the public.
"Most people don't attend and we have
to do everything on our own if there's no
public input," said Peg. "The incident of
the bronze statue in Civic Court wouldn't
have happened if there was public input
from the beginning.
"Right now we're working on these signs
'and we think they will enhance entrances
to town."

An OPP diver and OPP Const. Andy
Burgess, out of uniform, helped drag one
of the men by his lifejacket onto the beach
and onto a waiting stretcher. Ambulance
officers immediately began draining water
from the man's lungs and pumping his
chest in an effort to revive him. Another
police officer held an air bottle to the
man's mouth, pumping air into the man's
body.
Meanwhile, other police officers pulled
the second man to shore and am am-
bulance ogficer who was helping his part-
ner with the first victim moved to
resuscitate the second man.
Both ambulance officers continued to
pump the chests of both victims as several
men helped lift the men into the am-
bulance above the beach on a hill. The
curious lined the route to the top of the hill
and the beach.
