be why there are no marriages in hea-

their accord, they never have the same
temperaments, tendencies or tastes.
Sailow Their needs are different, their manner

FRANK WITH THE ASSESSOR
WeiPto-Do /Informer's Wife racpostea

status.
Along with the tax discussion that
comes with the annual payment of taxes
is a story of a vigorous old reformer
who used to live out in the country not
far from Ottawa, and whose life in
Franklin county has beeraa long agita-
tion against corruption -in other peo-
ple.
The old man, according to the Ottawa
Herald, had accumulated a competence
by the exercise of shrewd business deal-
ings among his neighbors and others,
and was content at times to let himself
be pointed out as a model of 01100085.
He owned large property, but it was
never noticed that his estate loomed up
large when the assessor came around.
One day, some years ago, according to
his story, the assessor visite' the home
in the old fellow's absence kid had his
talk with the wife instead of the man
himself. The wife knew of no reasons
why the same talk that was offered to
other people should not be delivered to
the assessor and with pardonable pride
she recited a correct list of her husband's
holdings. When the otcl man came
home his wife told him as a matter of
news what she had done.
He had not been heard to swear in
public for many years, but the hired
men's ears were shocked at that time by
a torrent of profane words, and there is
one version of the dory which says the
old reformer struck his wife.

Did you ever try to give a careful
description of the appearance of some
object very familiar to you, such, for
Instance, as your own front door or
gateway, or the pattern upon soma
favorite article of dress? Try the ex-
periment, advises St. Nicholas. Un -
leas you are unusually observant, you
will be surprised to see how hazy Is
your mental picture. This experience
proves that we look without seeing,
and it is to be feared that many of
us read without thinking, As an ex-
ample, some at you may have heard
tt verse of a not obscure song in which
a young min is represented as en-
tering an Inhabited place upon the
back of a small horse, as inserting a
plume in his headgear, and giving It
the name of "Macaroni." For these
to whom the verse is unfamiliar it
may be said that the young man's
name Is "Yankee Doodle," If you have
read the stanza, is It fair to ask If
you know what "Macaroni" meatus? It
Is not a merely nonsenaleal rhyming
word.
