BY NEIL COMM
Working on the premise that self
esteem is one of themost important
things a teacher can give a student, the
Huron Perth County Roman Catholic
Separate School Board ad aside a day
last week to educate its teachers about
this topic.
You ask what is the purpose of educa-
tion, and my belief is it's to give children
a quality of life. So it's important that
they come out of the education system
with a strong sense of self esteem," said
Dr. Judy-Arin Krupp. Krupp is an inter-
nationally known author, educator and
speaker who worked with the teachers
during the day -long professional develop-
ment seminar held Monday at the Livery
Theatre in Goderich.
Krupp said she hoped to show the
teachers how they felt about their own
self-image, and give them tools to feel
better about themselves, so they could
pass on these tools to their students.
"You
can't give what you don't have,"
said adding that
s
left the pemin they seminar when
"recognize
how they feel about themselves, with con-
crete ways of helping themselves and
others develop a strong sense of self
esteem."
Krupp told the teachers that statistics
gathered by an American task force on
self esteem showed only one in three peo-
ple have high self esteem.
"So look to the person on your left,
look to the person on your right, only one
of you has high self esteem. If your sit-
ting there wondering I wonder which one
of us has it?' you don't have it."
She acknowledged that self esteem is
not built in a day, but over a lifetime.
"But if you have high self esteem you'll
do unconsciously the things for kids that
they will need to develop high self
esteem."
The task, force also showed:
• Self esteem is central to societal
problems.
▪ Family is the incubator of self
esteem, and schools should support
parents.
• Schools are second to family in pro-
viding children with self esteem, even at
the high school level.
• Children with high self esteem are
less likely to be involved in destructive
behaviour.
. You can't raise the self-esteem of
another, you can only set up an "esteem-
ing climate". Everyone is responsible for
their own self-esteem.
Krupp takes one definitioh of self
esteem as the quiet confidence we have
in our own potents: "It is not bravado,
and it is not me -itis."
Krupp made many points regarding
how we see ourselves affects what we
can do.
"How many of you are yo-yos? Lose
weight, put it on again lose weight, put
it on again."' She says this happens

She asked a member of the audience
what his best golf score was over nine
holes. He responded 29. So she said his
potential score over 18 holes is 58 (dou-

Mr. McQuail suggested, "We're going
to have to accept more and we'll have
to put some of the blame on the govern-
ment. We can do some cutting without
gutting the system."
Mr. Jewitt added, "Our schools have
never been in better shape then they
are now. There's no one prouder of the
schools than I am. The schools are not
going to fall down with this motion.
"We shouldn't have allowed ourselves
to get into this situation. We have a gun
to our head."
The HCBE administration will review
the budget and bring it back to the
board on May 7 for final approval.
