Seaforth seeking tourism dollars
BY SUSAN OXFORD
Tourism in Canada generated $24 billion
in 1988 and about $11 billion of that went
into municipal, provincial' and federal
government coffers as taxes. Huron coun-
ty, and Seaforth, would like to earn some
of those tourist dollars.
Four Seaforth representatives attended a
Huron County Tourism 'Trade Show, April
28, and came away with new ideas to pro-
mote tourism. The tourism show was spon-
sored by the Tourism Promotional Ad-
visory Committee (TourPAC), an ad hoc
committee of people involved in the travel
and tourism industry in Huron county. was held at the Huron
County Museum, Goderich, and was open
to invited community members. Seaforth
representatives were Cathy Vida,
Economic Development Coordinator; Bob
Fisher, Business Improvement Association
chairman; Larry Parker, Economical
Development committee (EDC) chairman;
and Judy Keuhl, EDC representative.
Some of the features at the tourism show
were a brochure exchange, a brochure pro-
duction workshop and a tourism marketing
workshop. Two speakers from government
gave information on programs to help with
tourism building.
.Judy Keuhl found the tourism show to be
good, but left her wondering where to go
from there. The show made her realize
how much Huron county has to offer to
tourists with its' beaches, towns, fall fairs
and culture. Judy preferred the idea of
communities viewing tourism as a
cooperative venture rather than individual.
Larry Parker found the show to be a
forum for the good exchange of ideas. He
saw working together with communities to
promote each other a good thing for the
county. Larry saw that Seaforth needs to
learn more of what Huron county has to
offer, and how to accommodate tourists to
make them want to spend another day
here.
Bob Fisher said Seaforth's interests were
well represented, and noticed some other
Huron county communities didn't attend.
He liked the fact that the county took the
initiative in tourism and hopes something
good will come of it. Bob saw that work
has to be done organizing county -wide
cooperation to promote Huron county.
Cathy Vida came away from the tourism
-
show with some ideas on how to begin in-
vestigating tourism possibilities for
Seaforth. She said much of Seaforth's

tourism is centered on sports and recrea-
tion events and not enough on pure
tourism. Cathy said Seaforth does have
places of interest to tourists if we look at
the broader picture of what tourism is.
All participants liked the brochure ex-
change and could see incorporate it into a
tourism plan for the county and Seaforth.
They said a new brochure could be created
and displayed in racks in public places.
The brochures could be alongside others
from other towns in an exchange program
to better promote the county.
Seaforth's representatives had sugges-
tions to make next year's tourism show
snore successful, including inviting special
interest groups such as campground and
bed and breakfast operators.
Most of the people representing seatorm
favoured tourism promotion as a county-
wide effort rather than an individual town
effort due to the costs of promotion. Also
taken into account was that beach towns
do attract more tourists than most inland
towns and by taking a cooperative ap-
proach costs would be reduced.
SPOOLED ROTTEN - Mary the Goat, the official mascot of Ryan's Landscaping in
Walton, was the all -too -willing recipeint of plenty of love and popcorn at the
Seaforth Home and Garden Show. Julie Medd and Stephanie Dale obligingly stuffed
her furry face Wednesday evening. Elliott photo.
