the 1991 season:

director, Peter Shiith has a long history
of working in new play development - at
Manitoba Association of Playwrights,
Banff Playwrights Colony, Prairie
Theatre Exchange, Blyth Festival and
Alberta Theatre Projects. He has a deep
understanding of Blyth - the theatre and
its artistic vision, the community, and
our audience. We are most pleased to
have him begin work in Myth beginning
May 18t, working with Katherine Kaszas
until her tenure is completed this Fall.
Mr. Smith continues in the rich tradition
of past artistic directors in reaching out
across Canada to bring the best
theatrical artists to Blyth to create new
and exciting works that speak to us as
Canadians."

A resident of Calgary,. Mr. Smith is
currently in rehearsal directingp
Rat In The Skull for Alberta Theatre
Projects which is a fascinating look at
the struggles and conflicts in Northern
Ireland. Since 1984, Mi. Smith has ap-
peared in Canadian premieres at the
Blyth Festival and last season, he serv-
ed as Associate Artistic Director, coor-
dinating the new play development pro-
gram and directing a number of plays
for ,the theatre.
Born and raised in Barrie, he received
his training at the University of Victoria
where he graduated with a B.F.A in
in '
Theatre and at the Banff Centre where
he was a member of the Banff Master
Class. At the Blyth Festival he hasap-
peared Lilly, Alta. by Ken Dyba, Season's Promise by Anne
Chislett and Keith Roulston, Girls In The
Gang by Raymond Storey and John
Roby, The Mail Order Bride by Robert
Clinton and The Right One by Bryan
Wade.
A member of the 1990 Playrites Resi-
dent Company - new play development at
Alberta Theatre Projects, he recently ap-
peared
ir
N ichel Garman and The Weddddiing. by
James Harrison. He has also performed
in premiere productions of Unidentified
Human Remains at ATP, The Shunning
and Enemy Graces at Prairie Theatre
Exchange.
The Blyth Festival opens its sixteenth
season on June 15th with Colleen Cur
ran's newest comedy, Local Talent (June
15 to September 8); Laurie Fyffe's
premiere, A Field Of Flowers (June 20 to
August 24), the Quebec classic, Albertine,
In Five Times by Michel Tremblay -
translated by John Van Burek and Bill
Glassco (July 1i to August 25), Carol
Sinclair newest play, Firefly with music
by John Alcorn (July 25 to August 25)
and The Perils of Persephone by Dan
Needles - the hit of the 1989 season
(August 29 to September 15).
Tickets go on sale to Blyth Festival
Members beginning April 9th. The
