Petie has planted in Quebec, Ontario and British Col- umbia. He , is . planting now in Ontario because "it's warmer here than in Quebec." "The land •,itr this spot is very tough for the trees," Petie said. "There are gravel beds below the surface. The roots must be placed deep because gravel soil is dry. This kind of larch tree does well in bad soil. I'll plant about 600 of them here." In the six years that he's been planting, Petie has seen more people become con- cerned, for the earth. This concern is good and he said it "will make it better for the earth," but he said it has to be ecological- ly and politically directed. "I've seen an improvement in people's consciousness, but not enough with business and politics," said Petie with a look ofdisappointment. "It is better for the forest to be •partial cut than clear cut." "In Quebec, and 1 don't know about On- tario, we have a law about lumber com- panies cutting down trees," said Petie, leaning on his shovel. "Trees cut in a forest must be replanted. Even so, the forests are not the same as the original ones. In Canada we have so many forests to replace." During the winter months Petie con- tinues to work by cutting down dead or diseased trees in forests. He said he Pikes his work and is "excellent at what I do." bers elect exec i five tended the Fergus Mixed Invitation. ! 5 -pin bowling last week -end, the team of Dave Watson, Linda Gridzak, !:;rian Dale, Gwen Harburn, Lynn and Joe Sterner came fifth. I am hurt and disappointed by the coun- cil's position. As a non-resident of Seaforth 1 have no political clout to exercise at the polls when the next election comes around. But there are other ways to get the message across. Some of the Seaforth council are also in business in town. You can be sure I will not be patronizing any of the local businesses which represent the "English - only" mind set. Yours truly, (Rev.)
