Pure soft water contains oxygen and
hence it is unsafe to store such water in
leaden cisterns or to convey it by leaden
pipes. With ordinary spring water,
however, which always possesses a cer-
tain amount of hardness, there is not
this danger. The calcium sulphate in
such water causes a deposite of insoluble
lead sulphate on the pipe or ' cistern,
which is thus protected against further
action. Hence lead pipes can be safely
used for an ordinary water supply.

In Perth, one of the greatest apple pro-
ducing counties, the crop this year is
considered only fair. The quality is, on
the whole, good. The Baldwin, the old
standby, is a light yield ; so are the Spies
and the Twenty Ounce. Kings and Ben
Davie are fairly plentiful. Russets are
also a good crop and Greenings probably
the best of all. Snows of good quality
will be scarce. Early apples are a good
crop. After a couple of off yeara, the
Duchess is again very plentiful, and 75o.

these. The price for winter apples is
not expected to be high. Pears and
plums are an unusually light crop
throughout the county.
When a woman suffers from depress-

Did you ever notice that "t .lk" dots
not hurt a man much? Perfection is not
looked for in rutin, and when some
ono tr:es .to injure a roan by ranting
about a few faults ho has, the absent one
who is probably attending to his own
affairs, is elevated in'the hearer's estimat
ion, while the informant is lowered ac-
cordingly. If a man iruooks along, doing
fairly well, people realize that while be
has some faults, ho has more virtues,
and they are charitable enough to over-
look these faults, But it is different
with a girl or woman. No matter how
good and pure a woman may be, let some
one start an infamous lie about her, and
everyone is willing to pars it along, and
there is always someone to believe it.
That lie can never be lived down. It
may burn low, but gossip lovers are ready -
with new fuel. Did you ever think hew
damnably mean some goody-goody peo-
