But, if George Roney had to put a
number to it, he'd probably say that
friendship is worth as much as a good
maple syrup crop. And then some.
The Staffa man had • beet! spending the
past couple of months gearing up for the
syrup season, tending the lines in his
80 -plus acres of bush, when everything
came to a grinding standstill. Roney fell
from a ladder where he had been working
and suffered a broken pelvis and a broken
femur.
Things couldn't have looked any bleaker.
The painful accident was bad enough, but ..
the syrup - a year-round concern for
Roney, who heads out to the bash daily i
from December onwards - was set to run
in a week.
But friends, neighbors and relatives
rallied to the cause. Brian Miller, who has
helped George during syrup season in the
past, spearheaded a team effort to bring
in the 1990 crop for George.
"He's the brains behind it," agreed
George's mother, Margaret Roney, as she
poured the day's yield into containers last
Friday. A crew of five were bustling
around the steamy shed, canning the syrup
before shipping it off to town. Brother-in-
law Gary Betties of Seaforth loaded up his
truck with boxes of the maple syrup to
haul into Box Furniture, where George
peddles some of his crop.
"We don't know what we're doing, exact-
ly," Alan Miller admitted with a sheepish
grin. "We're all greenhorns."
Greenhorns or not, George Roney's
friends and family are giving him one less
thing to worry about as he lays in Lon-
don's University Hospital. George's father,
Frank Roney, admitted that they did have
to make quite a few panicked phone calls
to George in London, but despite a mishap
or two - and one nasty holdover - things
have gone pretty smoothly.
"That happened to George last year,
though," grinned Frank Roney, noting the
boilover, "so we don't feel so bad."
