The girls had won all their three .previous games to put them in the final. The girls were all fired up despite a cou- ple of injuries to Andrea Gingerich the goalie who played excellent in all games, with a painful swollen thumb hurt in a previous game, and Robyn Carnochan, another key player who sustained a bruis- ed hip in a previous game. In the final game, Paris started off the scoring early in the first Period but Seaforth quickly bounced back with a goal of their own. It was scored by Kim Rau and assisted by Cheryl Me twain and Melody Turner. Seaforth scored four more times in the first to end the period 5-4. Robyn Carnochan also scored, assisted by Melody Turner and Janice Rodney. Melody Turner scored assisted by Kris Gennell and Janice Rodney. Kris Gemmell scored assisted by Robyn Carnochan and Melody Turner. Cheryl McLlwain scored assisted by Kim Rau and Julie Carter. In the second period Seaforth dominated with Melody scoring all of Seaforth's four goals. Paris scored only one in the 2nd, to end the game 9-5 for Seaforth an the championship. Scoring in this game were Kiln Itau 3; Cheryl McElwain - 2, Robyn Carnochan - 1; and Kris Gemmell -L Assists went to Janice Rodney -1; Julie Carter - 1, Melody Turner - 1, Kerry McMillan - 1, and Robyn Carnochan - 1. The second game was played 2 P.M. Saturday against Paris (who Seaforth met in the finals). Seaforth whipped them in this game 12 - 4. Scoring were Melody - 4; Cheryl - 3, Kris - 3, Kim - 1, and Robyn - 1. Picking up assists were Janice - 2; Kerry 2, .Robyn. - 2, Kim - 2, Kris 2, Cheryl - 1, Julie - 1, and Jodie - 1. The third game was played Sunday at 3 p.m. against Niagara Falls. Seaforth doubl- ed the Falls by a score of 14-7. The referee called 19 penalties in this game, which also injured two of the local girls. Scoring were Kim - 5; Cheryl - 3, Melody - 3, Kris - 2 and Julie - 1. (Way to go Julie). Assists went to Cheryl - 4; Robyn - 4, Jodie - 4, Melody - 2, Janice - 2, Kris - 1, Kim - 1, and Julie - 1. Congratulations to all girls for games well played, and to Jodie Hugill who was picked M.V.P. Novice 2 ringette edged by one The Seaforth Novice 2 Ringette team opened play-offs on Sunday, March 4 with an 8-7 loss" to St. Marys. Seaforth, who finished first in regular league play, received a bye into the second round of the play-offs while St. Marys, who placed third, advanced to the second round by defeating Seaforth 1 in a closely fought series. At the end of the first period, St. Marys led 4-2 with both Seaforth goals having been netted by Melissa Robertson, assisted by Julianne Crowley and Tricia Jansen. At the break between periods, goalie Karen Delvecchio had to leave the game due to illness and was replaced in the net Atoms ru by Katie Holland. This seemed to be the spark the girls needed as both offensive and defensive players seemed to bear down. The second period was a thrilling one with Seaforth fighting to keep the score close. Cathy Coyne scored Seaforth's third goal unassisted with Melissa. Robertson ad- ding one on an assist by Jenny Delvecchio, one unassisted and another on an assist by Michelle Tyndall. Finally with only three minutes left, Melissa scored her sixth goal of the night, assisted by Cathy Coyne, to tie the score at 7-7. St. Mary's battled back one more time and won this opening game. A special "pat on the back" goes to Katie Holland for filling in as goalie. ersm On Saturday, March 3 the Seaforth Atoms took a break from the playoffs and travelled to New Hamburg for a one day tournament. The first game of the day was against Tavistock. It turned out to be a close game with Seaforth winning by just one goal. Luckily Charles Robertson was sharp in net or the final score might have been a lot different. Seaforth started the scoring when Jered Munro intercepted a pass at the Tavistock blue line and passed it over the Shaun Anstett who tucked it neatly into the net. In the second period Shaun „Anstett A,seoredf unassisted, on a delayed penalty call. He was tripped but got the shot away even though he was on his knees. This goal gave Seaforth a 2.0 Lead. Tavistock was not ready to accept defeat however and they Coons ste lead The Coons moved into the lead in the St. James Bowling League taking seven points from top place Kangaroos. Top scorers for Coons were Cathy Broome 239-637 and Kevin Broome 226-620. Francis Feeney led the Kangaroos with a 218-557 followed by Rob Taylor 213-503 and Don Nolan 200-479. The Tigers and Leopards played a close match this week with Tigers gaining three points putting them in second place. Top scorers for Tigers were George Love 293-718, Janice Morris 229-603, and Dave Moody 248-587. Pat Ryan led the Leopards with 205-528 p tour ey came back with two goals to tie the score at 2-2. With only three minutes left in the game, Brandon Nash got the puck over to Jason Smith who slapped it in between the goalie and the goal post. This 3-2 win put Seaforth against Clear- water in the second game. The boys were flying and the Clearwater team did not prove to be much of a challenge. Goals were scored by Chris Marion (3), Shaun Anstett, Jason Smith and Josh Dietz. The Pythons played the Monkeys this week and gained five points. Todd Caldwell led with a 270-664, followed by Brian Love 256-625, Jack Ryan 246-637 and Donna Lee 200.460. Murray Benneures led the Monkeys with 314-7 ; : followed by Ken Moran 256-557. The Ladies High Single and Triple was won by Cathy Broome 239-637. Murray Benneures took the Mens High Single and Triple with a 314-788. Team Standings are: Coons - 84, Tigers - 81, Pythons - 80, Kangaroos - 79, Monkeys - 72 and Leopards - 65. THE ONE THAT GOT AWAY...This tussle at the Seaforth net was close, but Exeter just couldn't pull it off. The Seaforth Peewee "CC"s The Seaforth Peewee "CC"s lost three players to injuries this past week, but still came out on top, winning the OMHA quarter finals against Exeter three games to one. They will now sit idle until Tavistock or Oshweken decide a winner of their series. The wait will give them time to healand rest up and prepare to take the next series of the OMHA playoffs. Exeter hosted the first playoff game on February 28. Seaforth blew through Exeter defense in 40 seconds, when Mike Devereaux took the honor of scoring Seaforth's first goal in the first period. Mike Weber dug the puck out along the boards, passed it to Boyd Devereaux who set up his brother. Seaforth's defense pit- ched in for Seaforth's second goal when Brad Moore flipped the puck to Mike Devereaux who set up Boyd Devereaux, who scored on a deke. At the seven minute mark goalie Adam Agar stopped a flurry of shots, denying Exeter a goal. Mike Watt won the face off and set up Mike Weber who chalked up number three for Seaforth. Late in the period Exeter got on the scoreboard when the center pulled Seaforth's goalie out and backhanded in number one for Exeter. Only 10 seconds into the second period Seaforth's Mike Devereaux backhanded a pass from Boyd Devereaux into Exeter's net for the fourth goal. Watt and Weber tallied up the fifth goal for Seaforth minutes later. Boyd Devereaux picked up number six for Seaforth, assisted by Mike Weber and Mike Devereaux. Exeter got its second goal when the puck was deflected over Seaforth goalie Chad Lamont. Ex- eter's third goal came when a scramble occurred in front of Seaforth's net and couldn't be cleared. Exeter scored its fourth goal during a two on one situation early in the third period. At the 6:20 mark of the period Seaforth goalie Chad Lamont stopped an Exeter breakaway, keeping Seaforth's lead tb two. GAME TWO Exeter put pressure on in the first minute of the second game, but Mike Watt took control of the puck when he beat an Exeter defenseman in the corner and, slip- ped it to Jamie McNichol who started Seaforth's scoring. Mike Weber, in the slot, scored Seaforth's second goal when Boyd Devereaux flipped the puck to him from behind Exeter's net. Boyd Devereaux chalked up another assist when he won the puck in a scramble with Exeter's defense �YJ and got it to Mike Watt who backhanded Seaforth's third goal in. 11 Seaforth had control over the first period then the same has to be said for Exeter in the second. Exeter revved up early in the second and came barrelling down the ice with a three on two situation. The open winger was given the puck as they closed in on Seaforth's net and Ex- eter's first goal was scored. Steve Mclnally stopped a breakway at the 11 minute mark, diving for the puck and knocking it off the Exeter player's stick into the cor- ner. Exeter kept up the pressure and Turn to page 16A .
