Number 7. No, it's not the ,Seaforth
Peewee. "Ws lucky number. The only
significance number 7 has is that it is the.
seventh trophy the Peewee "CC"s have
brought home for their Legion sponsors.
And what a trophy! - the WOAA trophy.
The setting was the Durham arena on
Sunday afternoon, and the players were
Seaforth's own Peewee "CC"s and the
Durham Peewees. The fans were nervously
talking, waiting for these two tough teams
to hit the ice. And hit it they did. From
the moment the clock started counting
down the seconds, nobody took their eyes
off the arena surface.
Both goalies were tested in the first
minute of play, but Seaforth goalie Adam
Agar took the brunt of the shots on net for
the rest of the period. He held his op-
ponents off until the 6:03 mark however,
and then Durham took advantage of a
powerplay and an open man to score the
first goal of the second game of this series.
The style of game Durham was playing
was completely different from the three
other times it had met up with the
Seaforth Peewee "CC"s, and those times it
went home the losers. Instead, in this con-
test Durham clutched, they held, and they
put a shadow on Mike Watt, tying him up
for the whole game. But, that was their
mistake.
Seaforth just reached in and came out
with its 12 other skaters - a bottomless pit
of talent. You can't shadow them all!
The second period started out with action
in Seaforth's end, a pile-up in front of the
goalie with the puck coming up loose and
presto, there were the Devereaux brothers.
Boyd Devereaux picked up the loose puck
and headed for Durham's end, Mike
Devereaux stick handled the puck from
Boyd's pass around Durham's net, flipped
it back out to Boyd, and in it went. The
game was tied at one.
Seaforth took the lead minutes later
when Mike Weber, fighting for the puck
along the boards, broke free with it. He
passed across to Mike Devereaux who dek-
ed around the defence and Durham goalie
to score number two for Seaforth. Durham,
needing this win to stay in the series, put
on the pressure and came back to tie the
score when their center passed the puck
from behind the net to the open winger in
the slot. Durham was able to take the lead
as the seconds ticked away in this period,
with a similar play - winger to open man
in the slot. Durham led 3-2 at the end of
the second period.
Tension and tempers were high in the
third period, but the action on the ice was
insurpassable. The Seaforth Peewee "CC"s
were tiring Durham out - slipping the
checks and throwing their weight around.
But it wasn't a cake -walk.
With less than five minutes to play Boyd
Devereaux passed to Mike Devereaux and
Mike Weber put his rebound in the net. It
was a tie game. With less than two
minutes to play Weber passed from the
slot to Mike Devereaux, who scored from
behind the net. Weber then scored to get
Seaforth an insurance goal.
Durham pulled their goalie, but the
Seaforth defence and goalie played tough
and stymied Durham's offensive. The
Seaforth Peewee "CC"s won 5-3 and now
head to the quarter finals of the Ontario
Minor Hockey Association playoffs where
they will meet either Exeter or Lambeth.

but Seaforth tallied more goals to win 11-5.

Novice ope playoff series with a won over Cli ton
Preparing for their playoff opener
against Clinton meant a couple of exhibi-
tion games for the Seaforth Novice prior to
Sunday's contest.
Thursday night in Blyth the fast skating
Jeff Cowan opened the scoring for the
home team, but Scott Van Dooren had a
pair of replies for that one before the mid-
way mark of period one. Scott Henderson,

assisted by Mike Murray, widened the gap
to 3-1. Blyth's Cowan had the lone second
period goal and the teams went to inter-
mission separated by one.
Before the final period was a minute old
Scott V. had pushed the difference to 5-2
and by 8:20 he had a natural hat trick and
five on the night.
Late in the game Jason Hulley, from
Scott H., and Scott H. alone with 41
seconds left, plus one more by Ben Mur-
ray with 12 ticks left, made it 9-2 over a
weary Blyth team who had only nine
skaters.
Friday night the Novice team hosted Ex-
eter in another exhibition game. Steven
Phillips and Sean Ludwig made no bones
about being ready for the playoffs as they
kicked out everything Exeter could serve
up and led the boys to a 3-0 victory. The
scoring Scotts were responsible for the

between Van Dooren's pair. Van Dooren's
first goal came late in period one and the
score stayed that way until 7:47 of the
third, 1:24 later the scoring was all over.
Sunday was finally here and despite be-
ing short on playoff experience Coach Mur-
ray Henderson was sure plenty of hard
work and an eager bunch of boys was all
he needed.
With a good crowd on hand Scott Van
Dooren decided to see how much noise
they could make and a breakaway goal
just 1:47 in was all it took. The Seaforth
fans were in a frenzy. Three minutes later
Scott Henderson worked his way toward
the Clinton goal during a power play and
unleashed a wrist shot that Matt Steenstra
saved. But Scott V. fanned the fire by
dishing home the rebound, 2-0. The buzzer
went, the teams changed ends and within
two and a half minutes you'd swear the ice
pad had been slanted becaause Clinton re-
bounded to even the match on two goals
by Jeff Heipel.
Four minutes of end-to-end action came
to a halt when Ben Murray stymied a Clin-
ton rush at his blueline beelinee into
enemy territory, down in behind the cage,
where a quick turnaround manoeuver lost
the defender.
Murray looked to the slot where Ryan
Van Dooren was patiently waiting to pull
the trigger. Out slid the pass and boom,
Ryan had the locals on top again, just
when Clinton figured stopping the Scott
and Scott show was the answer.
Clinton got back on even terms with 1:22
left on one of your all time blpoper goals.
Pat Culligan backhanded a shot high into
the air toward the Seaforth goal and just
like an NBA highlight film it hit nothing by
twine. Goalie Sean Ludwig experienced
what former Blue Jay Lloyd Moseby had
happen so often, it travelled just over his
head and rested in behind him.
At 13:45 of the next period Derek Nesbitt
scooped up a loose puck along the boards
at centre ice, cruised into Clinton's end
and upon noticing two defenders clinging to
big shooter Scott V, decided a deke to the
inside and then going outside was to his
liking. Once outside he set his sights on the
net and let go a wrist shot in hopes that
if it didn't go in the hard charging Ryan
V. might get the rebound. No need this
time as Nesbitt put it upstairs where Wally
and the Beaver share a bedroom, 4-3
Seaforth.
With Seaforth's big gunners guarded
closely the wingers took control along the
ouside as they found the extra room to
their liking. With Mark Vock absent from
the line up, Coach Henderson employed his
two big centres to rotate between the three
sets of wingers.
Near the 11 minute mark of the third,
right winger Ryan V. stole a puck in the
neutral zone, went around a Clinton
defensemari like a hoop around a barrel,
evaded the other defender and fired a low
wrist shot that Scott Henderosn just
redirected slightly to put Seaforth up by
two.
With five minutes remaining Berton
Dykstra pumped a breath of life into the
Clinton cheering section when he narrow-
ed the gap to 5-4.
Scott Van Dooren wanted no part of a
wild finish clinging to a one goal deficit, so
he gathered in a loose puck, zigzagged his
way through a crowded centre ice zone to
find himself in alone, and made no
mistake securing a 6-4 win to take the
series lead 1-0.
Sean Ludwig tended the goal for the first
two periods, while Steven Phillips kept
them at bay in period three. Defensemen
Jamie Dick and Mike Murray were very
sharp all night, thwarting many two on
ones, and clearing many loose pucks from
the slot area. Tim Sills was particularly
sharp offensively as he led many rushes
out of his zone and looked confident
rushing the puck.
Game two of this series goes Thursday
night in Clinton. Game time is 6:45 p.m.
Game three is Saturday in Seaforth at 7:30
p.m.
Highway 401 leads way in bowling
In Thursday Nighter Bowling the virtual
five team playoff tie was broken and the
Highway 401 team came out on top. They
recorded a resounding 428 total pin dif-
ference and a four point victory over the
last place Guttercats.
Leading the victory was Gerry Arm-
strong with 300/774. Murray Bennewies
spared and contributed 279/800 as did Carol
Johnston with 256/665. The regulars also
came through with big games, Doug Vock
219/623, Joanne Knights 207, Janet Moody
191.
Doug Leonhardt tried to carry the Gut -
tercet team with 320/732 and Carol Ben-
newies also was hot with 228/620. The
balance of the team couldn't keep up to
the pace set by the competition but Dave
Moody and Michelle Deighton hit briefly
with 223 and 182 respectively.
In the closest match of the night the
Wildcats edged the Bears by 11 pins for
three of four points. Both teams were
struggling and actually had the lowest
team totals on the night.
The Wildcats' big game was turned in by
Don Deighton with a super 316 final game
(Don prefers we don't mention the first
two). Ralph Johnston rolled a 247. Gary
Bedard a 215 and Sharon Marshall added
a 180 to ensure the victory.
The Bears kept it close on the strength
of Karl Tiechert's 246/633 and Wayne
Butt's 228/615. Dan Bennewies rolled 233,
Pat Deighton 196 and Deb Bedard a 194,
enough for one point.
Mao in a close matchup were the
Ballbangers taking three of four points
from Beatlejuice with a 67 pin total dif-
ference. Mel Malian was big shooter for
the winners with 259/627. Doug Procter
recorded 233, Barb Alexander 197 and
Steve Steep 217.
Beatlejuice had a big game from Eric
Matzold 271, as well as Michelle Bennewies
212, Brian Dale 259 and Sherry Turney 201.
The most excitement of the night was
generated by Dianna Steep's personal
season high 206/512.
After three of ten playoff weeks the stan-
dings are now Highway 401 9, Wildcats 8,
Ballbangers 7, Beatlejuice 6, Bears 5 and
lastly the Guttercats still with 1.
