John Peterman, of near Belmore, had

week. He was hauling in hay, and had

There is next thing to a famine in
lambs. They aro hardly gettable at any
price. Now and then a botcher picks
up one, but he isn't anxious to touch
them as he has to retail at a price that
is prohibitive to the average housewife.
A few years ago the bottom fell out of
the sheep market, and after a year or
two most farmers sold out entirely.
Now sheep are in unprecedented de-
mand, and the wise ones who hung on
during the dull period are reaping their
reward. Breeding ewes are bringing
unheard of prices. Those who have
marketable lambs are holding them till
fall. A young ram that would bring
four Or five dollars now Will be worth
tiviee the money in the fall, with ti little
feeding before marketing.

membership, Court Arthur, No. 222
won one of the banners, having in-
creased from 5 to 43 members. St.
Marys court won another banner. It is
gratifying to note these two courts were
nuder the jurisdiction of W. G. Strong.

Professor Creelman of the Ontario
Agricultural College, says that the cry-
ing need of the Canadian dairy industry
to -day is an improved milking machine,
They are using one at the College now
that milks eight cows atone and the same

strated.

The death of Mrs. Wm. Kidd took
place at her home at Harriston at 12
o'clock on Tuesday night, Jnly 24th,
after a lingering illness. She and her
husband were among the earliestsettlers
in Carrick, Mrs. Kidd having lived on the
4th concession of that township until
January, when the family moved to Har-

A gang of Frenchmen were loading up
the largo qnantity of telegraph poles
bronght to tho station yards hero last
winter by P, Brown. The poles 50 Peet
long brought each a $5 bill to Mr, Brown.
What mnet be the cost before they are
loaded and shipped to where tho com-
pany use them? The foreman says that
it is the intention to take off the wire
off the Elora Road this fall and string
the wire on the poles along the railway
track. They are selling the old poles
in sections at 15 cts. each to any one

A horse attached to a loaded hayoart
while passing under a railway bridge in
Stratford, was frightened by a train pas-
sing overhead. A young lady crossed
the street with a boggy and the run-
away tried to junip over the boggy but
landed with his fore legs on one side and
his hind legs on the other. The buggy
was damaged but the young lady escaped
with a scratched face and a bruised

The Department of Agriculture pro
poses to extend its cold storage car
service from dairy products to fruit.
Several years ago the Government under-
took to pay five dollars toward the Dost of
icing each car for butter or cheese.
This produced a demand for cold storage
cars. Last summer an average of a hand•
red a day were used from July lst to Sept
15. It expected the fruit men will find
the cool cars an advantage in marketing
their goods.

On Monday eveuing, July 23rd, several
Foresters and their wives gathered in
the Foresters' Hall, at Gorrie and pre-
sented Mr.N. McLaughllin with a beauti-
ful gold ring, on which the emblems

Accompanying the presentation was
a well -worded address, to which Mr.
McLaughlin made a suitable reply. A
pleasant time was spent during the even-
ing, lunch was served and all departed
to their homes, regretting the loss of
such an estimable family from our
midst, but wishing them abundant pros-
perity in their new home in Winnipeg.
