LAST MINUTE FRENZY at the Seaforth net was the story for Brad Beuttenmiller are man for man against Lucan here, but
the last five minutes of the Centenaires' home game against it paid off. Seaforth beat the top team 5-4. Elliott photo.
Lucan on Sunday. Goaltender Jason Cooper and teammate
Centenaires subdue first -place Lucan Irish
The Centenaires didn't seem to be com-
pletely on top of their game on Friday
night against Exeter, losing the match 3-4,
but the team more than made up for the
deficit with a crowd -thrilling game against
the current league leaders, Lucan Irish,
finishing with a 5-4 win.
The Exeter game saw Seaforth remain
scoreless until the first part of the second
period. By the time of the Centenaires'
first goal, Seaforth was already down 3-0.
Jason Schoonderwoerd put the team on the
scoreboard at 5:29 into the second period,
assisted by Brad Carter and Brian Taylor.
Four minutes later, Carter fired the puck
into the Exeter net on a pass from Rich
Boddy and Tim Moore, making the score
a more manageable 3-2.
The third period saw the Exeter Hawks
draw on a power -play to score their fourth
goal of the game. Mike Murray followed
the Hawks' example at 13:42 in the period,
and scored a power -play point for the
Centenaires with assistance from Paul
Mcllwain and Brad Beuttenmiller. It
wasn't enough to make up the difference,
and both teams had run out of steam. The
game ended with no more goals and a
final score of 4-3 in favour of Exeter.
"The guys just didn't go out to play
hockey on Friday night," Coach Graham
Nesbitt commented later. In addition, the
team was minus a player who, of late, was
playing good hockey and racking up the
points. Coach Nesbitt reports that Darren
Akey did not dress for Friday's game, and
from all indications will not be returning
to the Centenaires for the remainder of the
season.
Credit should go to goaltender Bill
Tremeer, who played his first game on
Friday night since being laid up in the
hospital for a few days over the holidays.
The Hawks were a formidable foe, and
Tremeer stopped a total of 35 shots on
goal.
If they didn't go out to play hockey on
Friday night, they changed their tune on
Sunday afternoon and went out to avenge
every loss that they've suffered at the
hands of the mighty Lucan Irish.
Lucan and Seaforth held each other at
bay for the entire first period and the ear-
ly part of the second, with both teams re-
maining scoreless until Lucan came onto
the board at 14:14 with an unassisted goal:
Paul Mcllwain replied about 30 seconds
later with a powerful goal, assisted by
Brad Carter and Mike Murray.
Fired up, the Centenaires kept coming.
Andy Ball took the puck from Carter and
Brad Beuttenmiller and scored Seaforth's
second goal at 6:18 in the period, making
the score 2-1. Lucan was not to be outdone
and fired back two goals in quick succes-
sion, but Seaforth had the last word in the
period and tied the game with 1:35 remain-
ing in the period, Ted Sills taking the
assists from Blair Beuerman''and Cartel..
The Centenaires knew that action in the
early part of the final period was going for
be the deciding factor in this game and
went to work as soon as their skates hit
the ice.. Mike Murray took a pass from
Carter and Beuttenmiller in the first
minute and a half of the period to give

Seaforth the lead, and at the 17:25 mark
Andy Ball, again assisted by the team of
Carter and Beuttenmiller, barrelled the
puck into the net to make the score 5-3 for
Seaforth.
The final five minutes of the game was
one of the most entertaining and exciting
pieces of hockey action that the arena has
seen for some time. Lucan, fighting hard,
scored a goal at 5:05 to put a tie game
within easy reach, but Seaforth wasn't
about to give it to them. The final few
face-offs, feet from• the Centenaires' net,
probably gave goaltender Jason Cooper a
few grey hairs but he stood his• ground.
Lucan was to get no more breaks from the
Centenaires. The game ended with a 5-4
score and a standing ovation for the
Seaforth team.
And a few Lucan fans were even heard
to admit, on their way out of the arena,
that "...Seaforth played a really, really
good game, you've got to give them that."
