HICKS' MAY STORMS
Five Storm Periods of Reactionary
Character Promised for the En-
suing Month
Rev. Id. R. Elicits, of St. Louis, ieeues
a lengthy bulletin on bis proguostica•
tions for May, from which the following
summary is extracted: -
The eters period of disturbance, which
begins near the first of May, has its cen-
tre ou June 16th, extending through
July. 'Any extreme tendency in weath-
er, or other meteorologioal conditions,
which may exist during the early part
of a Mars period will, as a rule, be con-
tinued throughout the period. The gen.
eral trend of charaoter of etorm and
weather conditions, through Juno and
July may, therefore, be approximately
foresbaclowed by the conditions that
may prevail from about the 1st to the
23rd of May. Sections at this time hav-
ing an excess of storm and rain may
reasonably count on such tendency dur-
ing the continuance of the Mars period.
A regular storm period, central ou the
9th covers the 7th to 12th. The- full
Moon in perigee on the 8th, and at ex-
treme South declination on the 11th, will
be factors in the resulting perturbations
of this period. By the 8th low barome-
ter and much warmer will be advancing
from the West, attended by decided
storms, From 9th to 12th a series of
storms will sweep most parts of the
country. progressively from West to
East. Rapid change to high barometers
Westerly gales and much cooler will
-follow this series of storms, and frosts
will visit many central to Northern sec.
tions from the 10th and 11th.
A reactionary storm period is central
on the 14th, 16th and 16th. This period
is within the Mercury period, seen by
the Mercury brace in the diagram to

reach from the 16th to the 26th, The
Mars and Mercury disturbances make it
entirely possible and probable that vio-
lent storms may appear about the 14th,
16th and 16th.
A regular storm period runs from the
19th to the 23rd, This promises to be
the most active to violent period in May.
It is a regular Vulcan period, covered
by Mars and central with the Mercury
period. The Moon is on the equator on
the 1915, in apogee on the 22nd and new
on the 23rd. All these things combined
indicate that low barometer, very warm
humid atmosphere and electrical storms
of marked severity will prevail at the
first and continue to the end of this
period. All through the central part of
Eiay there is great tendency at the storm
periods to daily cycles of storms, for a
number of days in sucoession, breaking
up as a rule with a general, and very
violent storm. This period, the 19th to
the 23rd, promises to bring one of these
cycles. If after the first storm the bar.
otneter does not rise, and the wind
change to Westerly and decidedly cooler
about the same time on the following
day look for a repetition of the storm,
and so on for several days, or until the
changes named oconr. The culmination
of this period will fall within 36 hours of
midnight on the 22nd. The outlook for
this whole period is threatening, but we
will name Monday, Tuesday and Wed-
nesday, the 21st, 22nd and 23rd, as dan-
ger days. Should the normal changes
occur, clearing and much cooler weath-
er should appear about the 2415 and 25th,
A reactionary storm period is central
ou the 2615, 27th and 28th with strong
probabilities that the combined Mars and
Mercury influences will pause prolonged
threatening, if not stormy weather into
this period up from the preceding period.
If the Mars period comes in with an ex-
oess of storminess, the period extending
from the 19th to the 23rd will not only
bring a daily cycle of rain, wind and
thunder storms, bat these daily storms
will hardly reaoh their culmination and
come to an end until about Saturday,
Sunday and Monday, the 26th, 27th and
28th. A decided change to cooler will
spread over the country generally at the
wind up of these storms.
The last day of May is the beginning
of a regular storm period which will ex-
press itself during the opening days of
June. We will say in closing that, un-
der ordinary conditions the outlook for
,Tane is exceptionally threatening. The
storm diagram for that month shows
that the Mars, the Venus and the June
solstice periods are all central in June,
Extreme and phenomenal results may
be expected, and the conditions in May
will indicate the general character of
phenomena to look for. A general max-
imum of electrical storms, with many
seismic And volcanic disturbances, are
among the pre-eminent probabilities.

sults.

Sodas are crisp squares
of wholesome nourishment.
They are the food that
builds strength and muscle.
They are as easily digested
by the child and invalid
as by the sturdy workman.
They contain ALL the food
properties of finest Cana-
dian wheat flour, in a form
that delights the appetite.
Always fresh and crisp in
the moisture -proof packages.
.At all grocers in 1 and
3 pound packages
this will give a delicious sauce.
Lettuce Salad -Pick each leaf over
carefully, being careful not to break
them. Shake off and drain in a net.
Keep in a cool place until ready to serve.
Arrange the loaves in a salad bowl as
tastefully as possible, and serve with
French dressing or with sweetened
cream. If preferred, engem, vinegar,
salt and pepper may be used instead of
the Freuoh dressing.
When boiled potatoes are required
quickly the process may be hastened by
having two pans of boiling water. Pour
the contents of one of these over the
potatoes, and then place them all hot in
the second pan, In this way the boiling
of the water will not be checked at all.
Baked potatoes will cook much more
quickly if they are first placed on the
top of the stove and turned over once
before being put into the oven.
REMARKABLE TEST
Hyomei has been Known for Years and is
Guaranteed to Cure Catarrh.
We have given Hyomei a most thor-
ough and remarkable test.
The remedy has made so many
cures that we have urged its use in the
most chronic oases of catarrh.
Breathed for a few minutes four times
a day, through an inhaler that comes
with every outfit, it soothes the irritated
mucous membrane of the nose,throatand
Iaugs, kills the catarrhal germs, and
restores complete health. Its healing,
antiseptic fragrance penetrates to the
most remote air passeges, as no medicine
taken into the stomach can possibly do.
Immediate relief almost always follows
the use of Hyomei, and great benefit is
seen after a few days' treatment.
The complete Hyomei outfit posts only
$1, and consists of an inhaler that can
be parried in the pocket or purse, and
will last a lifetime, a medicine dropper,
and a bottle of Hyomei. Is this is not
sufficient for a complete cure, additional
bottles can be obtained for 60 cents.
Compare this small expense with the
fees charged by specialists.
If you cannot obtain Hyoinei of your
dealer, it will be forwarded by mail,
postage paid, on receipt of price. Write
to -day for consultation blank that will
entitle yon to services of our medical
department without charge. The R T.

Hog Notes
The pigs from a mature sow are al-
ways better than from a young one.
The hog can turn more articles of diet
into meat than any other farm animal.
A good foundation for profitable
growth can be laid before the pigs are
born.
Alwaye select the largest, most grow -
thy and best sows for breeders.
A good, clean, bony leg is better than
a fleshy one on a hog as well as ori any
other animal.
n mai.
Sunshine, fresh air and access to the
ground are all necessary to the health,
growth and development of pigs.
Dry dirt is not only an absorbent, but
a disinfectant, and therein lies the ad-
vantage of a good earth floor.
An abundance of milk for the first
eight or ten weeks of the young pigs'
life is the best preparation they can have
to fit them for profitable growth in after
life,
One of the best feeds for young pigs
after they have learned to eat is whole -
Cate soaked until soft in sweet skim
milk.
The brood sow after her pigs attain a
few days' age requires a good deal of
rioh food to keep up both her Condition
and her flow of milk.
Continuous growth is necessary to
make swine profitable, and this cannot
be obtained without plenty of feed. A.

No matter how well fed the sows and

SPOILS OF ANCIENT EGYPT
The Oldest Piece of Sculpture in -the
World Recently Brought
to Light.
Among the spoils of the last season's
campaign by Prof. W. M. Flinders Petrie
and his assistants of the Egypt explora-
tion fund is a remarkable sculpture.
probably the oldest in the world. It was
found at Wady Maghara. Sinai, where
hitherto the difficulties of maintaining
a camp in the desert five days' camel
journey from Suez had prevented any
serious excavation,
The sculpture, which would p'robably
not be accepted by the committee of the
Royal academy if sent in for exhibition,
represents I{ing Semerkhet of the first
dynasty smiting down a Bedawi sheik,
after the manner of kings about 4600
B. C. Above that is a figure of the gen-
eral who commanded the expedition.
This is by no means the most remote of
the discoveries, There is, for instance,
a collection of flints used for working
turquoises out of the sandstone, prob-
ably by the Bedouin in a period about
10,000 B. C. They show several types of
which the hammers, the larger scoring
flakes and the small flakes with a point
are the most distinct.
Among the most interesting relics are
the Roman objects found at Oxyrnkhos
by Drs. Grenfell and Hunt. They in-
clude some specimens of the most beau-
tiful colored glass, the arm of the Aphro-
dite grasping Cupid, a limestone female
head of remarltable type and a large col-
lection of bone and ivory dice. Wher-
ever the Roman soldier went there are
always found these primitive gaming
instruments and they are precisely the
same as those in use to -day.
A sphinx, hearing"inscriptions in an
unknown script, excires curiosity, and
the presence of a good hieroglyphic in-
scription as well as the sphinx shows
that these were not done as ignorant im-
itations of hieroglyphics, but that it is
a definite system of writing.

HEALTH AND BEAUTY
Onions are an excellent nerve tonic,
a:jd a email onion eaten raw will often
cause restful sleep.
Inhaling the fumes of vinegar froth a
well -saturated cloth will overcome the
effects of ordinary anesthetics and pre-
vent the unpleasant nausea.
A bed should bo placed so that the
head is toward the windows, for in this
way the light will not fall directly an
the eyes and disturb the last hoar of
sleep that is claimed by some to be the
most beneficial,
There is nothing better for a tired body
tha'i a complete relaxation for ten
miuutee before meals. The physical
organs used iu the process of digestion
are rested and refreshed before beginn-
ing their good work.
The girl who is decidedly "brown"
like th3 nut, must use certain colors that
will bring out her coloring best. Warm
grays, like the puoo, red browns rose
red, nasturtium, ecru, apricot color,
peach blossoms, amber in all its tawny
tones and ivory white are all good for
her.
Eyes often show a tinge of green and
where this is noticed no bines but the
darkest are to be worn; bright reds if
the skin is fair and clear, and darker rich
reds 11 it is otherwise. The pale shades
of pink, green, old rose and silver gray
are choice for evening wear, but all the
putty or fawns should be avoided, they
partake too much of the actual coloring
and are never becoming.
For ingrowing toenails let the na I
grow a little long and then put someab-
sorbent cotton under it and push it back
with a toothpiok. Never use a steel or
a sharp instrument. If the nail is very
sore at the corners apply a little piece of
'cotton saturated with laudanum and
bandage it around the toe at night. In
the morning the toe will feel all right.
For tired feet after having been on
them for ten or twelve hours take a foot
tub containing about a gallon of water
as hot as can be stood, put in a piece of
common washing soda about the size of
au egg and let it dissolve. Soak the feet
in it for twenty minutes or longer. Then
wipe them very dry and massage them
with a little vaseline.
Bleeding Piles
"For two years I suffered from bleed.
ing piles and lost each day about half a
cup of blood. Last summer I went to
the Ottawa General Hospital to be open
sted upon, but my old trouble returned
and again I lost much blood. My father
advised me to use Dr. Chase's Ointment,
and two boxes cured me. I have every
reason to believe that the cure is a per-
manent one." -Mr. Arthur Lepine,
School Teacher, Granite Hill, Muskoka.
