Huron -Bruce MP Ben
Lobb will be expressing his
support for the OPG DGR to
Canada's new Minister of
Environment and Climate
Change when the House of
Commons reconvenes
Dec. 3.
Lobb, who returns to
Ottawa after his October
reelection to a third term,
outlined his plan to speak
"face-to-face" with Minis-
ter Catherine McKenna
about her pending decision
on the construction license
for the low and intermedi-
ate level nuclear waste pro-
ject at the Bruce nuclear
site.
"We'll make sure that we
have our input," Lobb said in
a telephone interview.
Extended to December
2015 by former Conserva-
tive minister Leona Agluk-
kaq, the decision was
delayed amidst mounting
oppositions from dozens of
Canadian and American
organizations and First
Nations communities
around the Great Lakes that
want the project halted, or
delayed.
Lobb said the delay by the
former minister was done to
give more time and "make
sure every last person was
heard."
The OPG would see per-
manent storage of low and
intermediate level nuclear
waste (excluding high level
fuel) from Ontario's
nuclear reactors, including
Bruce Power in Kincar-
dine, Darlington and Pick-
ering sites. The dry waste
consisting of ash and
incinerated materials (low
level) and reactor compo-
nents and tools (interme-
diate level) would remain
radioactive for more than
100,000 years.
Both OPG scientists and
an independent Joint
Review Panel (JRP) of
nuclear mining, radiation
and waste experts recom-
mended approval in 2015 of
a construction license for
the project, but the deci-
sion lay in the hands of
McKenna as the new minis-
ter. An operation license
and new round of approv-
als would follow the con-
struction, before waste
could be deposited
680 -metres underground
below the nuclear site,
about 1.5km from Lake
Huron.
OPG has also committed
not to proceed on the pro-
ject without the support of
the Saugeen Ojibway
Nation that resides a half-
hour north of the site. This
commitment came at the
end of two rounds of JRP
hearings over the past two
years, involving hundreds
of participants and thou-
sands of pages of
documents.
"She'll have a ton of stuff
to catch up on, but I'm sure
it's at the top of her file,"
Lobb said.
Opponents include organ-
izations that endorsed McK-
enna's candidacy like the
Sierra Club of Canada, as
well as Stop the Great Lakes
Nuclear Dump, celebrity
opponents like David Suzuki
and dozens more, including
United States senators, who
called for President Barack
Obama request the project
quashed.
Lobb said the new Liberal
government ran a platform
touting respect for the scien-
tific community, its work
and government scientists
and he will press them to
commit to the same support
to the OPG DGR recommen-
dation by the Joint Review
Panel. He said he heard the
same sentiment while can-
vassing the riding of
Huron -Bruce.
He said she was busy
with the Paris Climate
Change conference, and
has dealth with rulings
against the Keystone XL
pipeline in Alberta, and
Montreal's recommended
dumping 4.9 million litres
of untreated wastewater
into the St. Lawrence River.
Lobb said he opposed the
Liberal decisions on both
projects.
Lobb said he stands
behind the "rigorous" Envi-
ronmental Assessment that
recommends the OPG DGR
proceed with the project and
will ask Minister McKenna to
side with the scientific com-
munity, over the stigma of
the nuclear wate project
posed by its opponents.
"I hope that she'll respect
the work that's been done
and let science rule the day,"
he said. "It's time to move
forward."
