Publishers might have to reimagine how
they showcase potatoes in their cook books
after students at the Lucknow Central Pub-
lic School served up the oft julienned and
deep-fried root vegetable as some of their
favourite book characters.
From Nov. 16-18 the Lucknow school
held its 5th annual "Build a Potato Con-
test" where students and staff were
encouraged to accessorize, design and
render a potato into their favourite book
characters.
"It's a lot of fun," said Educational Assis-
tant Jean Johnston, who is responsible for
bringing this inventive activity to get kids
excited about reading to the school.
She first heard of this contest happening
at an American school five years ago and
thought to try it a Lucknow.
"I thought it was cool. I love books and
most people can afford let a potato go," she
said.
There were several minions, a Mickey
Mouse and a Minnie Mouse, a Waldo of
Where's Waldo fame, and, of course a Mr.
Potatohead.
Some teachers got in on the fun bringing
to potato characters such as Scarlett o'Hara,
among others.
The event was to coincide with the
school's Scholastic Book Fair to encourage
reading. All children who entered a potato
in the contest were able to pick out a book
from the fair.
"They like it," Johnston said. "You can see
when they are getting ready, coming down
for gym or whatever, and you can see them
looking at the potatoes and what's come in
since the last day"
"It's just kind of fun and it's about books.
It makes sense to me," she said.
