Through a culmination of five
years of research, planning and
construction the new state of the
art County of Bruce Patrol Shop for
the South East sector of Bruce
County was officially opened in
Lucknow on November 13, 2015.
Bruce County Engineer Brian
Knox welcomed everyone to the
grand opening ceremony, which
was accompanied by a slide pres-
entation to aid in following the
agenda.
County of Bruce Warden and
Mayor of Huron -Kinloss Mitch
Twolan spoke. The Patrol Shop had
been in the budget for about five
years. "We were lucky to get the
facility in Huron -Kinloss as all the
mayors wanted it. This shop is the
flagship facility in Bruce County on
which all future facilities will be
modeled. We are proud to have it
here."
Knox gave a review of the pro-
cess of how the new Patrol Shop
came to be and how it came to be
located in the Bruce County High-
ways yard in Lucknow.
The original shop for the South
East sector had been in Holyrood
in a crude shop that dated back
into the 1940s. That shop is still in
existence and was in use until the
mid 1960s. At that time the Bruce
County Highways yard was moved
to Lucknow.
Five years ago, the County

operation. Virtually all of them
have met the end of their func-
tional life and need to be
replaced.
After the actual facilities were
assessed, the greatest needs of the
communities served was studied.
After in-depth research was con-
ducted in which it was considered
to further divide the County into
five sectors rather than the current
four, it was decided to keep it to
four County facilities to serve the
entire area.
It was determined that the
South East sector was in the
greatest need of a new facility. A
review was conducted of a variety
of sites which included Kincar-
dine and Ripley as well as
Lucknow.
It was determined that Luc -
know had the potential to best
meet the criteria for the new
facility. Once the additional
road allowance had been pur-
chased from the municipality to
expand the lot, the Lucknow site
had enough space for storage
facilities to house a year's worth
of materials. It was decided to
include five bays, rather than
stay with the former four, as it
was anticipated that if some-
thing happened to the Walker-
ton facility, the Lucknow shop
could better accommodate
sharing services with Walkerton
for the South West sector. The
building was set back further on
the lot to be further from resi-
dential lots to address noise
issues. The research for the
design and location of the shop
included garnering the thoughts
of those who would be working
in the facility to ensure these
were included in design
specifications.
Once this research was com-
pleted, the County tendered out
to local contractors and servic-
ing contractors to prepare the
lot and give quotes for the pro-
ject. Knox assured the gathering
that "the Domm Construction
submission was very complete
and was by far the best submis-
sion tendered." Al Reich's Back -
hoeing & Haulage Ltd. was cho-
sen as the contractor to prepare
the site.
