It takes a village
Community draws together to create
® Halloween weekend
Jane Hoy
At the Dungannon Reflec-
tion Meeting with the Agricul-
tural Society, Seniors Associa-
tion, Dungannon YOUth
Group, and Lions Club it was
decided to have a fun
Hallowe'en weekend kicking
up heals with dances, spook
house, community pot luck
dinner and CAMP for YOUth.
Friday, October 30, 42
youth came to the Dungan-
non Ag Hall in full costume
for a night of dancing. The
next day the Dungannon
YOUth Group gathered at
the Dungannon Seniors Hall
ready to welcome their
cohorts from Stratford. The
12 youth from Dungannon
joined forces with the 9
Stratford youth to create a
'Spook House' making both
the upper and lower levels of
the Seniors Hall an experi-
ence of gooey slosh and a
scream -filled tour of the hor-
ror chambers, searching for
a missing patient infected
and spreading a viral dis-
ease. The community of
Dungannon then came
together to the Ag Hall for a
community potluck dinner.
The Lions Club provided the
children who came in cos-
tume with their first candy
bag as they set out for door
to door Trick or Treatin'.
On Saturday evening there
was an adult costume dance
at the Ag Hall.
The Dungannon YOUth
Group and Stratford returned
to the Seniors Hall where they
stayed the night and into Sun-
day cooking food together,
writing spoken word, watching
movies and eating caramel
corn. On the more serious side,
they explored the purpose of
life ....having a life of purpose.
They spent time in small group
discussions addressing con-
cerns such as envy and peer
pressure and what it means to
be a good friend through all
conditions; drawing and deep-
ening their understanding of
the power of diligence and
trustworthiness.
The Dungannon YOUth
Group has become known
for these camps, where
youth between the ages of 11
- 14 years build bonds of
friendship with other youth
in the area. They explore
themes of personal and spir-
itual development and how
this inner strength is applied
to everyday living for them-
selves, family, friends, and
community. Actions speak
louder than words are how
one becomes a contributing
citizen. This was definitely a
weekend of action!
A big thank -you to all who
support the Dungannon
YOUth Group, not only on
this weekend but all through
the year.
The Dungannon YOUth
Group meets every Friday from
6:30 - 8:30 p.m. at the Senior's
Hall in Dungannon. For further
information or if interested in
joining, please feel free to call
Jane Hoy at 519-529-7929.

November guest artist Jack De Ferrari

About 6 years ago, on any
given Saturday morning at
the Art Gallery where I
work, two ten year olds, full
of energy and ideas would
appear, looking for scraps
of wood, pieces of card-
board, glue, string, tape,
and anything else they
could find to be able to exe-
cute their latest creative
ideas. At the time, they
were keenly interested in
making swords, towers, cat-
apults, and trying to find
ways to (safely) blow things
up. Both of these talented
youngsters have continued
on different creative paths,
one is a promising young
musician, and the other,

from the Gok and Mali Families.
Guest Artist for November.
One example of Jack's
early creativity, is his "Duct
Tape Mona Lisa; done at age
11. The main focus of his
interest at the time? How to
use duct tape creatively.
In those early, formative
years, Jack knew he loved
coming up with ideas, and
figuring out the "how to; but
he had no real artistic focus.
However, since entering high
school, Jack, now in Grade
12, has found the necessary
guidance to become more
purposeful, and to learn the
fundamentals of "how to"
execute artistically what his
fertile imagination holds.
Jack credits his art teacher,
Mr. McClinchey, and the art
program at G.D.C.I. with
helping him to realize
that he
could develop his creative
talents into a life- long
profession.
Jack says that while he had
lots of ideas "when he was a
kid", he was not aware that
there were techniques which
he could learn to help him
execute his ideas. Now, with
help from his teachers, he
has been able to make crea-
tive leaps, and plan a future
career in art and design. Jack
has acquired skills in many
art forms, including photog-
raphy, and has learned how
to create interesting, myste-
rious finished photos.
This past summer pro-
vided opportunities for a
huge leap forward in Jack's
artistic and personal growth.
He was able to participate in
a one month program at
Emily Carr University in

B.C., where he was exposed
to some of the basics of West
Coast Native design. This
was followed by a one month
job at an Algonquin Park
summer program. There, he
was taught how to carve a
paddle, following which it
was his job to teach campers
the skill.
For his display at the GCG,
he plans to join these two
experiences, featuring a pad-
dle which he carved and has
decorated with his own
interpretation of a west coast
design.
It was a treat to see how
Jack has developed from a
youngster interested in figur-
ing out how to make a good
sword to play with, into a
thoughtful, self confident,
creative, and talented young
man, focussed on his educa-
tion, eager to learn and put
into practice new concepts
in pursuit of a future in crea-
tive design, using art skills,
and imagination every day.
Goderich Coop Gallery is
excited to welcome this
promising young artist as
our Guest Artist for the
month of November.
The Gallery is also plan-
ning many new things for
November; first up, on
November 16, we will be
having our semi-annual 're -
hang' of the gallery space.
Visitors will see lots of new
art and our member artists
will all be moving to differ-
ent spaces. We will be invit-
ing Christmas Artisans to
the gallery with lots of ideas
for that special Christmas
gift; and we will again be
participating in Ladies'
Night on November 16. This
year we are planning a spe-
cial draw which will include
small pieces of art from
each of our member artists.
Then, to celebrate all the
changes, and the season, we
are inviting you to an Open
House on Saturday Novem-
ber 21, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.
We hope that you will join
us as we celebrate our tal-
ented Guest Artist, our
Christmas artisans, our new
decor, and best of all the
Christmas Season.
Drop in, Monday to Satur-
day 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. to the
Goderich Coop Gallery,
lower level, 54 Courthouse
Square, where you will
always find a member artist
to greet you. Hope to see
you soon!
