Canada .Aocna Member of the Canadian Community Newspaper Association and the Ontario Community Newspapers Association Val's Views Valerie Gillies Remembrance I t is with great respect and gratitude that we remember those who gave their lives in the World Wars, Korea and in supporting those who have been or are engaged in present and ongoing battles and peace- keeping missions. The military is a proud part of our Canadian history and her- itage. Around the world our military has gained respect for Canadians that is ongoing. It is the sacrifice and bravery of those who gave their lives that has given us the freedoms that we have today. They self- lessly gave to ensure the future generations would live in peace, without fear. We are very fortunate to have this heritage in Canada. Each place setting at the Remembrance Banquet at Branch 309 had a bookmark with the famed poem written by John McCrae which is printed here in honour of those who fell. We will remember them. In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing fly Scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sun- set glow, Loved, and were loved, and now we lie In Flanders fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe; To You from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields.
