"Cyclone"
Taylor: Tara's NHL
hockey legend
Submitted by Bruce County
Historical Society
June 9 will mark the anni-
versary of the death in 1979
of Cyclone Taylor. As the
NHL Stanley Cup playoffs
reach their climax, it is a fit-
ting time to recall the life of a
Bruce County boy who
became a Canadian hockey
legend.
Taylor played pro hockey
from 1905 to 1923. He won
Stanley Cups with the
Ottawa Hockey Club, 1909,
and the Vancouver Million-
aires in 1915 and was
elected into the NHL Hall
Of Fame in 1947. A grand-
son, Mark Taylor, later
played in the NHL from
1981-1988.
In its biographical article,
Wikipedia also explains that
it was Canada's Governor-
General at that time who
pinned the nickname
"Cyclone" On Taylor because
of his lightning -fast skating
speed.
On June 21, 1980, a his-
torical plaque was unveiled
in Taylor' s honour in Tara' s
Memorial Park. To mark the
occasion an address was
given by Village Councillor,
Douglas Wallace. The fol-
lowing are excerpts from
his speech:
"Frederick Wellington
"Cyclone" Taylor was
born in this village on June
24, 1884. He was the sec-
ond son and fourth child of
Archie and Mary Taylor.
Taylor's names came from
his father' s best friend,
Frederick Wellington
"Doc" Thomas, then Tara's
best and only veterinarian.
At the tender age of five,
he would spend his eve-
nings in the winter, at the
pond by the river watching
Mr. Riggs, the local barber,
speed skate. After having
swiped his sister Heather's
clamp -on skates one night,
going to the pond, clamp-
ing on the skates, he wob-
bled out onto the ice and
started out on what was to
be a wholesome and
rewarding career. Jack
Riggs took a fond liking to
him and bought him his
first pair of skates when he
was six.
Eighty-six years later,
"Cyclone" Taylor said:
"Jack Riggs was my first
hero." Fred Taylor had his
mind set on becoming a
fast and clever skater on
the ice and took every
opportunity to learn from
those who were better,
always thinking back to
those winter nights in Tara
with Jack Riggs. He was not
to be denied this ability
and became the first, and
the greatest hockey super-
star to be named to the
Hockey Hall Of Fame. He
was recognized on the
King' s honour list in 1946
as a member of the Order
of the British Empire.
An outstanding Canadian,
an outstanding athlete, a
faithful husband and father,
a Christian gentleman, a son
of Tara."
