Madill had forty three competitors on their team. Some schools at the meet had nearly twice the number of athletes so Madill athletes worked hard to earn every point they could. They battled their way to earn 29 'per- sonal bests' in their per- formances, qualified 40 athletes for WOSSAA, won an individual midget girls and senior boys title, claimed the midget girls and junior boys team championship and earned the overall girls and boys Huron Perth champion- ship. The points were spread out among several schools in Huron Perth with Northwestern of Stratford winning the boys overall and St Mikes of Stratford the girls overall. However, Madill prevailed with the most points to win the overall boys and girls award. The win upheld a long standing tradition at Madill. Over the past 24 years, the school has won the title 21 times. The Madill midget girls won the Huron Perth title. Jessica Johnston led the way winning the sprint hurdles and clinching sec- ond in distance hurdles. She also set a new personal best in high jump clearing the bar at 1.49 to win the event. These wins also gave her the honour of being named Huron Perth midget girls' individual champion. Taylor Mont- gomery and Jasmine Vader continued with their strong performances in throws winning several firsts, seconds and thirds in shot put, discus and javelin. It was a well bal- anced team with distance runner Emma Metcalfe contributing third places in both the 1500m and 3000m events. In high jump, Sarah Strome and Brookelyn Johnston also were second and third respectively and Jessica Kuepfer won third in long jump. Connecting smoothly at all the exchanges, the 'A' team of midget girls 4X100 relay (Jessica Kuepfer, Jessica Johnston, Emma Metcalfe, Lexi Smith) sprinted to a first place finish and their best time so far this season. In the midget boys divi- sion, Matt Darrell won the long jump with a leap of 5.09m as well as earning third in the 400m (58.30) and third in triple jump (10.89m). Teammate, Mitch Deans sprinted to a second place finish in the 200m (24.98) and second in triple jump (11.13m). Again the team was balanced with races. The junior girls throwing duo of Sydney Wightman and Katie Murray contin- ued to perform well. Wightman won the discus event (27.96m) and Murray won the javelin 25.61m), both with 'best ever' throws. The junior boys team clinched the Huron Perth team title earning points in throws, jumps, and on the track. Ben Newell narrowly missed two Huron Perth records with his win of 43.09m in discus and his leap of 1.71m in high jump. Newell was also second in javelin hurling the spear 40.54m. Teammate Mitch Ward, sporting a heavy hand cast after surgery for a broken bone in his hand, placed a worthy second behind Newell in discus and qualified in both his other events, shot and jave- lin. Brandon Murray and Franklin Marshall contrib- uted with top placings in the distance events on the track. Karissa Schiestel com- peted well in throws earn- ing first in discus and sec- ond in javelin with a new personal best throw (26.81m). Madill Track & Field team at the Huon Perth championship track meet in Goderich. pits, Jayden Anderson Johnston leaped 4.41m to win the gold and teammate Victoria Jacobs jumped 9.48 in triple jump. In a tough 'triple' combination of 800, 1500m and 3000m, Emily Meier showed great perseverance to earn solid fourth places in all three events. The senior girls 'A' relay team of Lauren Thompson, Rachel Cook, Victoria Jacobs, and Jayden Anderson Johnson sprinted around the track in the 4X100 relay to win second overall. Teammates on the 'B' team were not far behind with a third place finish. (Olivia Mcarter, Jes- syca Scott, Emily Meier, Karissa Schiestel). Justin McKague was named the senior boys Huron Perth champion winning all three of his jumping events (high jump 1.85m, long jump 5.79m, triple jump 12.25m). Stuart Cameron had a solid per- formance in the throws earning second place fin- ishes in shot (14.27m), dis- cus (38.20m) and javelin (41.41m). On the track, Lyndon Smith sprinted over the 110m hurdles to a first place finish. Smith also won third place in the 200 (24.29s) and long jump (5.47m). The team win comes as a result of several factors. The 'all round' team effort by all athletes in all divi- sions played a key role in the win with a smaller team of forty three ath- letes. The Madill competi- tors worked as hard at the meet as they do at prac- tices, giving their best effort. Madill also has the benefit of several coaches to assist the athletes Submitted throughout the season, at practice and at meets. This year the team of coaches consisted of Sandy Macln- tyre (head coach), Gary and Maureen Lisle, Karen Dailleboust, Heather Durnin, Steve McKague, Lisa Jackson, Julie McDon- ald, and Devan Ballagh. With forty athletes quali- fying for WOSSAA, the team is now gearing up for the two day competition to be held at TD Waterhouse Stadium at the University of Western Ontario May 21, 22. The long and arduous road to OFSAA has begun. At WOSSAA, the top six in each individual event and relay qualify for OFSAA West Regionals held at the same site a week later. From OFSAA Regionals, the top four then qualify for OFSAA in Toronto the following week.
