Spring Art
Celebration
The annual Spring Art Cel-
ebration was held at Luc -
know Central Public School
on a beautiful sunny May 7,
2015. Although the show was
open to the public in the
evening, the residents of
Pinecrest Manor and Nine
Mile Villa were treated to a
preview showing in the
afternoon.
Prior to the afternoon
showing, grade 2 students
Elle Schumacker, Maya Gjes-
ing and Ben Rutledge agreed
to be interviewed about the
show.
Maya Gjesing explains
that throughout the school
year, "we do things, then
make cool stuff and decide
to share it with the people at
Pinecrest like our water to air
projects and pinwheels."
Some things that were done
for the art gala
included stories written by
the students that they had to
edit themselves. Maya's story
was "Kyle's trip to the zoo" in
which Kyle gets excited and
runs off ahead, becoming
lost. He does get in trouble
from his family for running
off, but Maya made sure to
add a happy ending where
Kyle gets to go back to the
zoo for his birthday.
Elle Schumacker's class
was working on learning
about simple machines. They
decided to make their own
machines. It seems that cata-
pults were one of the favour-
ites. Elle's book was "The New
Born Kittens" that is based on
a true story about kittens
born at her home. She con-
fides, "I did change a few
things to make it a better
story," such as there were
really three kittens born while
her story only had two and
she really didn't have a friend
over to see them as her friend
was still in bed when she
called her.
Ben Rutledge is proud of
the catapult that he built for
the simple machines project.
He explains, "It's a lever. I
thought about it a lot then fig-
ured out how to do it." Ben's
story is "The Lynx" which is
about a hunter with a pet lynx
named Lucky. It is a very
detailed story with a tragic
event as the climax comes
when Lucky attacks a wolf to
protect the hunter who was
out hunting a seal. There is a
happy ending to this tale, as
well, as Lucky is able to crawl
back home at the end.
Cliff Emerton of Pinecrest
thinks the Spring Art Cele-
bration in fantastic, adding
"I wish I had some more
artistic ability"
Jane Brodie was accompa-
nied at the Spring Art Cele-
bration by LCPS student
Kaley Kahgee. Brodie thinks
the opportunities for art is
good for the students as it
"gives them more to do with
their mind so they don't go
to waste." When asked what
she thought about the stu-
dent escorts helping out the
visitors Brodie smiles
broadly and indicates her
escort, Kaley, exclaiming,
"She's the best!"
Hazel Latimer of Pinecrest
is impressed with the Art
Celebration. She relates, "I
really enjoy it. The classes
put in their best effort and
express their passions."
Berle Palmer, escorted by
student Nathan Barger,
remarks on the difference
from when she was in ele-
mentary school. "You can't
talk with kids because they
always have their tech with
them. It is so different it flab-
bergasts me!"
Marie Phillips of Nine Mile
Villa also remarks on the dif-
ference from her days in ele-
mentary school. "The school
is a wonderful place to be
now. It is interesting." When
there had been school dis-
plays at Phillips school it had
usually been cursive writing.
The 2015 Art Spring Cele-
bration was certainly a suc-
cess. The students were
proud to show what they had
been doing and the attend-
ees were almost as excited as
the students to see what cre-
ative works they would find.
Shows like this are a won-
derful opportunity for differ-
ent generations to share
what is being done in the
schools of today.
