Cleaning up Lucknow and surrounding roadways Adopt -a - Highway and Pitch -In Canada 2015 Valerie Gillies Lucknow Sentinel There were three annual cleanup events happening in and around Lucknow the first week of May in 2015. The Lucknow Kinsmen worked their Adopt -a -High- way cleanup going south on Road #1 on May 6. The Luc - know Lions Adopt -a -High- way cleanup going north on Road #1 was held the same evening as the Pitch -In Can- ada event on May 7. There were nine Kinsmen, which is an average turnout since beginning their Adopt - a -Highway project in 2008. Together they covered two and a half country blocks. Rod McDonagh reported that they picked up "a tre- mendous amount of debris. Where does it all come from year after year!" The Kins- men project is done on a reporting basis with the Huron County office in Goderich. Each year McDonagh files their report. The Lucknow Lions have been doing their Adopt -a - Highway project working north on Road #1 for 10 years. This is a separate pro- ject through the Bruce County Shed in Lucknow. Unlike the Kinsmen and Pitch -In projects, the Lions do not sort for recycling. The Pitch -In Canada cleanup organized and sponsored by the Lucknow Chamber of Commerce saw the poorest turnout in 16 years. There were less than 20 people participating, partly due to the Guiding Association being unable to attend this year. Despite this lack of extra hands, the volunteers were successful in covering 11 of the 13 des- ignated areas within the vil- lage of Lucknow. On a posi- tive note, it has been a trend over the past few years that there is less debris within the village than in previous years. Both the Kinsmen and Pitch -In groups used the arena blue box bins to recy- cle to reduce the amount of garbage going to the landfill. The volunteers who have taken the time and effort to make Lucknow and area a cleaner, more attractive desti- nation to live, work and play are to be commended for their dedication. One of the best thank you gestures that can be made for this amazing boost to spruce up after a hard winter will be to keep Lucknow and the surround- ing countryside clean. That will take everyone working together. It is the least we can do to demonstrate our grati- tude and pride.
