Canada .)cna Member of the Canadian Community Newspaper Association and the Ontario Community Newspapers Association Val's Views Valerie Gillies Playing Catch-up It has been another busy week in and around Lucknow. It is a good thing that the Sentinel comes out every week in order to be able to keep the news and views rolling on out. As promised last week, the Adopt-a- Highway/Pitch In recap is in this week's edition. On the business side of things, it was refreshing to be able to cover the opening of a business venture by young entrepreneurs. The Pennington -Fritz siblings have certainly set themselves up with a very ambitious sum- mer project. Another ambitious entrepre- neur is Mark Brecken- ridge with his creation of a huge custom - ordered steel bison. The 4-H clubs have begun another ses- sion. This week appears to be a foody week for the clubs with the Beef Club barbecue and the Fruit and Vegetable Club taking on the Community Garden to help supply the area Food Bank. The sisterhood of the Red Tent are start- ing a new season. On the opposite end of the spectrum, last weekend saw the retirement of two longstanding Guiding leaders. The sports pages have certainly under- gone a change. No longer are they filled with hockey, but the Madill track team has been busy with com- petitions and the bowling leagues are celebrating their end of season. Beginning this week, there will be a series featured in the Sentinel sharing the adventures and expe- riences of the Match- etts in New Zealand. Follow along the jour- ney through the words and photos that will appear through the next few months, per- haps not every week, but as it unfurls from beginning to end. For those who are in college or university, there is an interesting essay -writing opportu- nity to be part of a think tank to brainstorm for ways to rejuvenate the Atlantic Provinces. Although it is not local, it is open to all post- secondary students across many disci- plines throughout Can- ada. Be sure to alert the students you know to this amazing contest. I would like to remind those who wish to have Sentinel coverage of their event to please give suffi- cient advance notice for planning. I try my best to accommodate, but it can get very hec- tic very quickly at times. An alternative is to send in your own report and photos for publication. These materials should be sent to lucknow.edito- rial@sunmedia.ca. Lucknow News Ruth Dobrensky Members of the former congrega- tion of St. Peter's Anglican Church gathered together at the Sepoy Apart- ments last week to celebrate the Holy Eucharist with the Ven. Perry Chuipka. Those who were able to attend stayed for a time of fellowship and refresh- ment while wishing Bill Steele well on his wilderness canoe trip to the Mani- toba/Ontario border area. Speaking of people travelling, I heard from Pastor Ken DeBoer that he and Jocelyn have left for a cross -Canada biking trip. Ken told me they should cover 7,500 km by the time they get to Halifax. They left for the west coast last week to start their trip. We wish them a safe and exciting adventure. It's that time of year when clubs and churches begin holding fish fries and gar- den parties, there are several coming up in the area, check out the coming events sec- tion of the Sentinel for dates and places. I read with interest the article about June Elliott receiving her 60th anniver- sary membership pin of the Eastern Star. Congratulations June. The Order of the Eastern Star is a venerable organization who like many other organizations don't seem to be attracting many new recruits. My great-aunt Maggie Croft was a mem- ber until she passed away at the age of 93 and I think she was in the organiza- tion for at least 75 years. I remember as a kid walking with her in the Orangeman's Parades in Dundalk, she all in white and me dressed in a little white dress she had made for me. I didn't understand all the good works they did at the time, I just thought it was neat to walk in a parade with a lady I greatly loved and admired. Sympathy of the community to the families of: Elaine Lavery, 94, Kincardine (formerly Pt. Clark and Ripley); Joseph Murphy, 84, Stratford; Helen Benninger, 97, Walkerton (formerly Teeswater); and Darrell Pletch, 41, Mt. Pleasant. Dungannon & St. Helen's News Shag Campbell May 7 saw a dozen thirsty folks at the Dungannon Seniors Centre for coffee hour in the morning but only nine avid card players for euchre in the afternoon. High card was 53. Lots of folks were visiting families for Mother's Day on May 10. The Menno Miller farm had 5 baby foals recently, Fun to watch them out in the pasture. Most of the Amish farms are finished planting their spring grain and corn. Those rumbles you hear in the area are not thunder but farmers on the roads with tractors pulling whole trains of implements for tilling the earth and getting their corn etc. in the ground. Got some news? Call Shag at 519-529-7734. Purple Grove News Purple Grove WI Congratulations to Kyle Bridge and Holly on the birth of their son Wesley William born on May 13. First grand- child for Cheryl (Rivett) and Carmon Bridge. Congratulations as well to Courtney and Michael Bridge on the birth of their son Corbein Eugene Murray born on May 12. Another grandchild for Donna and Dennis Bridge. The south line will be a busy spot for the next while. The community - relative shower for Sarah Wray was held on Saturday, May 9 at Purple Grove. She was warmly welcomed by the community and eve- ryone there. Some of the Mother's Day gatherings included: Mandy and Don Zuk and boys of Walkerton visited with Janet and Wayne Rhody; Diane, Andrew, James and Alex MacDonald had a meal with Shirley and Doug MacDonald; Marilyn and Don Reid's family gathered at their place for Sun- day supper; Joyce and John Farrell hosted their family gathering which included June and Earl Elliott of "R" Villa and Mary Anne Kukoly; Maureen and Roy Collins enjoyed a meal with Irene and David and family. Sandra Percy Munro of Winnipeg visited with her sister Erlma Haldenby in Kinlough and with other family members. She also visited with Mary Anne Kukoly. CORRECTION Donation Amount The caption on the photo on Page 10 in the May 13, 2015 edition of the Luc - know Sentinel should have stated that the Lucknow and District Kinsmen donated $2,000 to the Dave Mounsey Memorial Fund Run Around the Square in Goderich.
