Proud father and coach tell their stories of the road to a Hockey Victory Lucknow Minor
Bobby
Raymond's DEL
win in Germany
Keith Raymond and
Rod McDonagh
Bobby's father Keith Ray-
mond gives the Stats.
This is Bob's second year
playing in Germany.
After finishing his junior
hockey with the Owen
Sound Saugeen Shores
Greys (Jr. B) he played 4
years at Rochester Institute
of Technology (NCAA Divi-
sion 1) and earned an Indus-
trial Engineering degree.
After playing 1 year in
France he returned to North
America, and played for the
Florida Everblades (ECHL),
Binghamton Senators (AHL)
and Charlotte Checkers (AHL).
We call him Bob, but
around the rink he is always
called Bobby by coaches and
teammates.
7 of Bobby's Mannheim
teammates are currently at
the World Championships as
members of the German
National Team.
Personal highlights of the
series were, game 4, when
Bobby recorded the game
winning goal and an assist as
Mannheim tied the series at
2 games each.
Game 5, Bobby is named
2nd star of the game, record-
ing 1 assist and blocking sev-
eral shots.
Coach Geoff Ward and his
assistants maintain a very
calm demeanor behind the
bench and his players reflect
that in their play, and how
they stick to their game
plan. 3 times in the semi-
finals against Wolfsburg,
Mannheim came back from
a 3 - 0 deficit to win games.
This is the 7th league title
for Adler Mannheim.
Rod McDonagh gives a
Minor Hockey coach's per-
spective on a successful
player.
I was Bob's first coach in
the Lucknow Minor Hockey
Association. It was at the
Tyke level and, although he
certainly showed early skills,
it was his approach and work
ethic that really stood
out. He loved being on the
ice and excelled at the prac-
tice drills.I take no credit for
where he is today other than
maybe instilling a early love
of the game in him. He had
many excellent coaches
throughout the LMHA, High
School and Junior levels
locally and at every team
along his rising path.
When Keith called and
asked if I would go over to
Germany with him for the
final series, it was an easy
decision. Coaches are always
interested in how players
develop and advance. This
would be a terrific stage to see
Bob play on. With the final
round best of seven tied at one
apiece, we scheduled in for
the rest of series. It went
another 4 games with the
Mannheim Eagles (Die Adler
Mannheim) winning 4 games
to 2 over the defending cham-
pion Ingolstadt Panthers. We
saw 2 games at his home
arena in Mannheim and
caught 2 away at Ingolstadt in
Germany's Bavarian Region.
The level of play was tremen-
dous as Mannheim had fin-
ished the 52 game regular sea-
son in fust place and Ingolstadt
in third. Both teams were sprin-
kled with German National
Team and ex NHL play-
ers. Mannheim's roster con-
tained Canadians Glen Met-
ropolit, Kurds Foster, Brandon
Yip and German bom Jochen
Hecht all of whom had NHL
experience. Both venues were
sold out for the final series with
Mannheim having a 13,600
seating capacity. The final was
broadcast on German national
Servus TV and streamed live
over the internet allowing folks
at home here to watch includ-
ing Bob's Grandparents, Ross
and Grace Gammie at
Pinecrest. With Game 6 on the
road, the Mannheim arena was
opened up with over 11,000
watching the game on the jum-
botron there. Many of them
were still present to meet their
returning champions at 4 am.
The fan base for the games
was unbelievable as they
stood, chanted, sang and
waved flags and banners
throughout the whole con-
test. It was normal for them to
be still there doing it 30 min-
utes after the game
ended. Practically everyone
wore a sweater and/or scarf
of their team. The atmos-
phere was more that of

European football. After a city
hall presentation the follow-
ing day the team was paraded
down Mannheim's main
pedestrian street with a huge
throng of citizens pre-
sent. The arena was opened
up the following night with
over 10,000 fans turning out
for the player presentations.
Keith and I were treated roy-
ally as we were allowed in on
team functions, supplied with
meals and, through Bob, pro-
vided with free tickets to all the
games. Players and the coach-
ing staff were very accommo-
dating with General Manager
Teal Fowler requesting that we
sit right behind the Mannheim
bench for away games. It was
he who insisted for us to be
sure that Bob took us down to
the dressing room/fitness area
for a tour meeting the players.
Speaking of superstitions,
opposition team managers
should be taking notice that
the cup follows Bobby Ray-
mond. In 2011 he won the

in 2012 with the ECHL Flor-
ida Everblades and now the
Deutshe Eishockey Liga
Cup. Bob also represented
Canada in Munich at the
Deutschland Cup Tourna-
ment in 2014.
Bob's compete level and
dedication to on and off ice
training have paid rewards
for him. It was quite evident
that he was a team player
and highly respected by fel-
low players and the coaching
staff. Never one to let it go to
his head, he was picked up at
Pearson International Air-
port by Lucknow 85's team-
mates upon his return and
off to Niagara Falls for a tour-
nament with his fellow
LMHA alumni.
