Andy and Anne Groen-
veld celebrated their 60th
anniversary with a come
and go tea on May 2, 2015
at R Villa Retirement Living
in Ripley.
Andy Groenveld and Anne
DeVries met in Holland in
1949 and dated until Andy
left for Canada in 1951. At
that time, people needed a
sponsor or to be married to
immigrate to Canada. At 18,
Ann was not ready to marry
and stayed in Holland to
help look after her mother.
Andy worked for a year in
Nova Scotia, then worked on
farms and in logging camps
in Ontario. He decided he
had to go back to Holland to
get Ann. They were married
in Holland on February 23,
1955. Their honeymoon
cruise began March 11, 1955
when they left Rotterdam,
Netherlands to start their
new life in Canada.
The Groenvelds had 5
children: Arthur George,
Stewart Gordon (passed
away October 28, 2014),
Gordon Andrew, Andrew
Robert and Anita Josephine
(married to Gary Rutledge).
They have 11 grandchildren
and six great grandchil-
dren. Andy's brother Simon
and his wife are still in Hol-
land, but Ann no longer has
any of her family there.
Andy has a sister in
Belleville, Ontario and Ann
has a sister-in-law in Hills-
dale, Ontario.

Retirement Living in Ripley.
Ann and Andy used to
travel to Florida each year
until 2004. They took some
trips back to Holland in
2006, 2009 and 2013. They
like to play cards and enjoy
living in their home across
the road from R Villa in Rip-
ley as they can visit their
friends and play cards on
Saturday afternoons. Ann
stressed that R Villa is a great
retirement place to have in
such a small community.
They stay actively involved
by driving others for
errands such as to medical
appointments. Sometimes
they are paid or are treated
to lunch for driving, but

they gladly do it as volunteer
help.
When asked as a long -
married couple if they had
any advice for younger peo-
ple Andy immediately
offered, "Watch out for easy
credit. I will get you into
trouble."
Andy and Ann Groenveld
are happy to be able to cel-
ebrate their long marriage.
They enjoy having opportu-
nities to get together with
family and friends to com-
municate. Their take on
marriage is that there are
ups and downs and give
and take. When asked if
they had advice for older
folk or couples like them-
selves, Ann grinned and
exclaimed, "Keep on
trucking!"
